This entry is part 1 of 2 in the series Jesus is God

Then He said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at My hands. Put your hand here and place it in My side. Do not be faithless, but believing.”28 Thomas answered Him, “My Lord and my God!29 Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen, and have yet believed.John 20:27-29

We need to understand that Thomas was a Jew. Jews only believed in one God, YHWH the God of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob, & were very careful not to use His name in vain. By the Scriptures of the Old Testament they new about the Messiah, but didn’t have a complete understanding or revelation about Him, until Jesus came.

The prophets of the Old Testament said in referring to their coming Messiah, that He is God or Divine:

But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel,
Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.” (Micah 5:2)

For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God (YHWH), Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.(Isaiah 9:6).

“The days are coming, says the Lord (YHWH), that I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the earth. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely. And this is the name by which he will be called: THE LORD (YHWH) OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.  Jeremiah 23:5-6; 33:15-16

Jesus is NOT God the Father!  But here we find some Old Testament verses & prophecies about YHWH (Jehovah), that  later in the New Testament it shows that were about JESUS, who also is God or YHWH:

In ancient Israel the name of a person was supposed to indicate some characteristic of that person, or be linked to circumstances, however trivial or monotonous, connected with his birth. Names and nature, as well as names and facts, were made to correspond, as can be found in the name Moses gave his son (Exod. 2:22), and the naming of Ichabod (1 Sam. 4:21). . . .Names denote natural or personal qualities. The Romantic History of Bible Names

That Jesus is YHWH doesn’t exclude the other two persons of the Trinity (Mt 28:19; 2Cor 13:14; 1Pet 1:2) & it doesn’t mean that Jesus & His Father are the same person (Ps.110:1, Mt.22), but that YHWH (I’AM –“Self-Existent One” or “Eternal”) is the one Triune God.

Even the word ‘Trinity’ is not found in the bible, it’s concept throughout the Scriptures is clear. Because a term or word used to describe a doctrine is not found, it does not necessarily mean the concept is not biblical. For example ‘Omnipotent’ is a word that’s NOT found in the bible, but we use it to explain one of God’s attributes “All Mighty” that it is found in the bible.

When I was a Catholic I believed in the Triune God , but believed that Yahweh (or Jehovah) was the God of the Old Testament , the name of God the Father & that He (the Father) was the only creator of the universe (in other words Jesus was a lesser God). It  wasn’t until I became born again (without a church yet) & I was trying to prove the Trinity to one of my sisters who got involved with the Jehovah Witnesses at the time, that I realize through the Scriptures, who Jesus really was & that He was also the creator (& was God or Divine) & existed before becoming flesh. Jn.1:1.

The Hebrew word for “God” (H430= Elohim) is plural. And we find that the personal pronouns “us” and “our” are used by God when speaking of Himself (Gn 1:26; 3:22, 11:7; Isa 6:8).

Also it’s important to note that the Hebrew word for “one” used in the central prayer of Judaism,  Deut.6:4 is the Hebrew word ECHAD  “Hear, O Israel: The Lord (YHWH) our God (H430= Elohim) . The Lord is one (H259=Echad)! “

‘Echad’ can mean a compound unity. We can find the same Hebrew word ‘echad’ on the following verses (Gn 2:24; 11:6; 34:16,22; Ex 24:3; Num 13:23; Eze 37:16-17), referring to the “one flesh” of husband and wife; “one people” comprising many individuals; “one voice” of “all the people”; “one cluster of grapes”; & “one stick” joined to “another stick” making a compoundone stick”

But what impacted me the most to the point of being overwhelmed like Thomas, and made me utter the exclamation  “My Lord & my God” to Jesus, was realizing through the Scriptures that Jesus is the YHWH of Exodus, the I AM of the burning bush. Please check next bible verses:

Jesus said: “And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You (all) have neither heard His voice at any time (G4455=ever), nor seen His form.Jn.5:37

And no one knows the Father, except the Son and he to whom the Son will reveal Him. Mat.11:27

Not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God; He has seen the Father.Jn.6:46. John 1:18     – Only Jesus had seen the Father!

For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me.Jn.5:46

Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was born, I AM.”  Jn 8: 58

Moses wrote the first five books of the bible (Pentateuch), also called the whole Torah! Israelites did heard God’s voice and saw his form! But according to Jesus Himself it was NOT God the Father who they heard or saw!

Let us see the Scriptures were God was seen & was heard by people in the Old Testament:

And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: “For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved” (Gen. 32:30).

Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel: 10 and they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness. 11 And upon the nobles of the children of Israel he laid not his hand: also they saw God, and did eat and drink (Ex. 24:9).

Then Moses said, “I pray, show me Your glory.” Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you.. . .Then I will take away My hand, and you will see My back, but My face may not be seen.. . .Then the Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. The Lord passed by before him,. .  Moses made haste and bowed to the ground and worshipped. (Exodus 33:18;34:9)

And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God. ” (Judges 13:22).

And the Lord (YHWH) was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the Lord (YHWH) God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice (1 Kings 11:9).

And I said: “Woe is me! For I am undone because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips. For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord (YHWH) of Hosts.” (Isa. 6:5).  – But Jn 12:41  says Isaiah saw the glory of JESUS!

Face to face I speak with him clearly,  and not in riddles, and the likeness of the Lord will he behold.  Then why were you not afraid to speak against my servant, against Moses? (Num. 12:8).

So Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.” When the Lord (YHWH) saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him from out of the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses.” Ex.3:3-4. “. . . 14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM,” and He said, “You will say this to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.” Exodus 3:14

And the Lord (YHWH) came down in a cloud, and spoke to him, Num. 11:25

And the Lord spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice. Dt. 4:12

and ye said, Behold, the Lord (YHWH) our God hath shewed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. Dt. 5:24-26

“Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord (YHWH) my God, nor let me see this great fire anymore, so that I do not die.” Dt. 18:16

The Father was only heard for the first time by some that lived in the time of the New Testament & just by very few people  Mt. 3:17 (Jn.1:32); & Mt.17:5,6,

YHWH accompanied the Israelites out of  Egypt (Exodus 17:5-6; Num. 20:11). But it was Jesus Christ that accompanied the Israelites out of Egypt (1 Cor 10:4). Some Israelites tempted YHWH, and were destroyed by serpents (Num 21:5-6 ), but they tempted Christ and were destroyed by serpents! (1 Cor 10:9.  “(Moses) esteemed the reproach of Christ as greater riches than the treasures in Egypt, for he looked to the reward” (Heb 11:24-26). But it was YHWH  who reproached Moses (Ex 4:14; Num 20:11-13; 27:14; Dt 32:51).

The Lord (YHWH) said unto my Lord (H113=Adon= master, owner),Sit thou at my right hand,
until I make thine enemies thy footstool. Psalm 110:1

Adonai is the plural of Adon, it can refer to men, angels or the Lord God of Israel (Ex.34:23, Psalm 8:1, etc)

While the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus asked them, “What do you think of the Christ? Whose Son is He?They said to Him, “The Son of David.”  He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord, saying:  The Lord said to my Lord,Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies
Your footstool” ’?Mat.22:44  (David – a man)

But to which of the angels has He ever said: Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”? Hebrews 1:13
