{"id":8590,"date":"2020-08-01T07:00:41","date_gmt":"2020-08-01T11:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=8590"},"modified":"2022-01-05T14:12:01","modified_gmt":"2022-01-05T19:12:01","slug":"gospel-of-john-chap-2-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=8590","title":{"rendered":"Gospel of John- Chap. 2 &#038; 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 2 of 17 in the series <a href=\"https:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?series=john\" class=\"series-95\" title=\"John\">John<\/a><\/div><p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Gospel of John, Chapter 2:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus&#8217; Public Ministry is found in chapters <strong>2-11<\/strong> in the book of John.<\/p>\n<p>1\/ <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Changing Water into Wine<\/span> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+2%3A1-12&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2:1-12<\/a>)<br \/>\n2\/ <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Cleansing the Temple<\/span> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+2%3A13-25&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2:13-25<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Now <strong>both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.<\/strong> 3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, <strong>\u201cThey have no wine.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>4 Jesus said to her, \u201c<strong>Woman<\/strong>, what does your concern have to do with Me? <span style=\"color: #800000;\">My hour has not yet come<\/span>.\u201d 5 His mother said to the servants, <strong>\u201cWhatever <span style=\"color: #800000;\">He<\/span> says to you, do it<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>6 Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of <strong>purification<\/strong> of the Jews, containing <strong>twenty or thirty gallons apiece<\/strong>. 7 Jesus said to them, \u201cFill the waterpots with water.\u201d And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He said to them, \u201cDraw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.\u201d And they took it. 9 When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. 10 And he said to him, \u201cEvery man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>11 <strong>This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory;<\/strong> and His disciples believed in Him. 12 After this He went down to Capernaum,<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples<\/span>; and they did not stay there many days.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+2%3A1-12&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jn.2:1-12<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This was the first miracle of Jesus, He knew that His miracles will draw the attention of the Jewish Leaders that eventually will lead Him to the cross. This is why He said &#8220;<em>My hour has not yet come<\/em>&#8221; because His ministry was just starting. He mentioned about &#8216;this hour&#8217; also this in other occasions (Jn.7:6, 30, 8:20).<\/p>\n<p>Notice these were not regular water-pots, in biblical times weddings lasted up to 7 days &amp; many people were invited, the drinks consisted only on wine, diluted wine &amp; water, also wine was a normal part of their diet (Gen.4:18, Deut.14:26, etc), but drunkenness was not acceptable (<a href=\"https:\/\/classic.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Is.+5%3A11%2C+Prov.20%3A1%2C+23%3A20-21%2C+Eph.5%3A18&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Is. 5:11, Prov.20:1, 23:20-21, Eph.5:18<\/a>, etc).<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps these empty jars used in the purification ritual could be a symbol of the emptiness of our first birth (water), and the miracle that Jesus performed, as the new transformed life that he was preparing to give to everyone who believed in him (born again), a real purification.<\/p>\n<p>The words <strong>\u201cWhatever <span style=\"color: #800000;\">He says<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">to you, do it<\/span><\/strong>&#8221; are the final words of Mary recorded in the Word of God. Jesus is the son of God also with Divine attributes like the Father, but Mary was just a vessel &amp; a human being. People who wrongly looks to Mary for guidance should pay attention to her last words.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"text John-2-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>Now the <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Passover<\/span> of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-26110\" class=\"text John-2-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>And <strong>He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business<\/strong>. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-26111\" class=\"text John-2-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers\u2019 money and overturned the tables. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-26112\" class=\"text John-2-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>And He said to those who sold doves, <span class=\"woj\">\u201cTake these things away! <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Do not make<\/span><\/span><span class=\"woj\" style=\"color: #800000;\"> My Father\u2019s house a house of merchandise!\u201d <\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-26113\" class=\"text John-2-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>Then His disciples remembered that<strong> it was written, <span class=\"oblique\">\u201cZeal for Your house<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"oblique\">has eaten Me up.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-26114\" class=\"text John-2-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>So <strong>the Jews<\/strong> answered and said to Him, \u201cWhat sign do You show to us, since You do these things?\u201d <\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-26115\" class=\"text John-2-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus answered and said to them, <span class=\"woj\">\u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\">Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-26116\" class=\"text John-2-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>Then the Jews said, \u201cIt has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-26117\" class=\"text John-2-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>But <span style=\"color: #800000;\">He was speaking of <strong>the temple of His body<\/strong><\/span>. <\/span> <span class=\"text John-2-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore, <strong>when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered<\/strong> that He had said this to them; and they <strong>believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said.<\/strong><\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-26119\" class=\"text John-2-23\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Discerner of Hearts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text John-2-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, <strong>many believed in His name<\/strong> when they saw the signs which He did. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-26120\" class=\"text John-2-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because <span style=\"color: #800000;\">He knew all <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #800000;\">men<\/span>,<\/i> <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-26121\" class=\"text John-2-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25\u00a0<\/sup>and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for <span style=\"color: #800000;\">He knew what was in man<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-26118\" class=\"text John-2-22\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+2%3A13-25&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jn.2:13-25<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This act was a Messianic confirmation (<a href=\"https:\/\/classic.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm+69%3A9%2CPsalm+119%3A139&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Psalms 69:9 &amp; 119:139<\/a>) &amp; demonstrated Jesus authority over the temple. It was his Father&#8217;s house and he had the right to do this. But also shows us that Jesus reproved any irreverent conduct in the house of God and that he would not hesitate to show his indignation against those who degrade holy things. He did this again towards the end of his ministry, which aroused the anger of the Jewish leaders who persecuted Jesus until they crucified Him. But let us not lose sight of what was the<strong> main reason<\/strong> for their attitude: Jesus jeopardized their income.<br \/>\nThe appreciation that both Jesus and the Jews had for the temple were different. While for Jesus it was a<strong> house of prayer<\/strong> (Matt.21:13), the house of his Father, for the Jewish leaders it was a market,<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> their business<\/span>. Don&#8217;t we see the same today? And they came and were baptized. 24 For John had not yet been thrown into prison.<\/p>\n<p>25 Then there arose a dispute between some of John\u2019s disciples and the Jews<strong> about purification<\/strong>. 26 And they came to John and said to him, \u201cRabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified\u2014behold, He is baptizing, and all are coming to Him!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>27 John answered and said, \u201cA man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven. 28 <strong>You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, \u2018I am not the Christ,\u2019<\/strong> but, <span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u2018I have been sent before Him.\u2019<\/span> 29 He who has the bride is the<strong> bridegroom<\/strong>; but the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">friend of the bridegroom<\/span>, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom\u2019s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled. 30 <span style=\"color: #800000;\">He must increase, but I must decrease<\/span>. 31 <strong>He who comes from above is above all;<\/strong> he who is of the <strong>earth is earthly<\/strong> and speaks of the earth. <span style=\"color: #800000;\">He who comes from <strong>heaven is above all<\/strong><\/span>. 32 And what He has seen and heard, that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony. 33 He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true. 34 For He whom God has sent <strong>speaks the words of God<\/strong>, for God does not give the Spirit by measure. 35 <strong>The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.<\/strong> 36 <span style=\"color: #800000;\">He who believes in the Son has everlasting life<\/span>; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jewish leaders refused to be baptized by John (Lk 7:30), and had previously questioned him about his right to baptize (Jn 1:25). The strong impact that John&#8217;s ministry had on the people, evidenced that many were looking for a spiritual fulfillment that the <strong>purification rites<\/strong> that the Jews practiced did not offer them. They had realized that their <strong>rituals<\/strong> had no power to change their lives, but that this is exactly what Jesus was offering them.<\/p>\n<p>As John the Baptist pointed out, he was only &#8220;the friend of the bridegroom&#8221;.\u00a0 Among Jews, that friend acted as a mediator to make the wedding arrangements and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">reunite the groom with the bride<\/span>. His mission ended once he heard the bridegroom&#8217;s voice, when he had been presented with the bride. After that the &#8216;friend&#8217; had to discreetly withdraw.<\/p>\n<p>In verses 31-36, John the Baptist made a contrast between Jesus and himself. First we see how <strong>its origin determines its nature<\/strong>. If the person &#8220;is of the earth,&#8221; then therefore &#8220;is earthly,&#8221; which means that he is simply a man. In comparison, the Lord &#8220;comes from heaven&#8221; and the logical deduction is that He has a Heavenly nature, was sent by God.
