{"id":774,"date":"2015-10-14T18:00:18","date_gmt":"2015-10-14T22:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=774"},"modified":"2025-10-30T13:30:32","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T17:30:32","slug":"mysticism-in-the-evangelical-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=774","title":{"rendered":"Mysticism in the Evangelical Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 1 of 9 in the series <a href=\"https:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?series=mysticism\" class=\"series-85\" title=\"Mysticism\">Mysticism<\/a><\/div><p>There is a persistent attack to debilitate the Christian Church from <strong>with in<\/strong>, the enemy is not looking to completely destroy it, but to contaminate it &amp; change it into something else, in order to use it for a different purpose for what it was really created. The way they are working to accomplish this is by bringing subtle false doctrines &amp; infiltrating the church with many false teachers, that will call for ecumenical <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">unity<\/span><\/strong> but will attack sound doctrine &amp; those who defend it. They are not hiding their intentions:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;There will not be any disassociation between the Universal (<em>means Catholic<\/em>) <span style=\"color: #000000;\">church, the Sacred Lodge of all true Masons, and the inner circles of the esoteric societies<\/span>&#8230; In this way, <strong>the goals and work of the United Nations shall be solidified and a <span style=\"color: #800000;\">new<\/span> Church of God<\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\">led by<strong> all the religions<\/strong><\/span> and by all the spiritual groups, shall put an end to the great heresy of separateness.&#8221; <strong>Theosophist &amp; Occultic Alice Bailey,<\/strong> See more on <a href=\"http:\/\/fanaticforjesus.blogspot.com\/2013\/04\/freemasonry-and-christian-church.html\">Fanatic for Jesus<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some of this false doctrines that are gaining acceptance in Christian churches are Western Mysticism, Catholic Mysticism,\u00a0 Contemplative prayer,\u00a0Gnosticism, etc.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t find any of these practices in the Bible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mysticism<\/strong> is a word derived from the Greek that means &#8216;<strong>conceal or mystery<\/strong>&#8216;.\u00a0 Mysticism is a claim of<span style=\"color: #993300;\"> direct union with God that bypasses the mind (reason),<\/span> &amp; also bypasses the Lord Jesus Christ &amp;\/<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">or His doctrine<\/span>. This is serious error since Jesus is the only mediator between God &amp; men (1 Timothy 2:5,\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240423005630\/https:\/\/www.kingjamesbibleonline.org\/Acts-4-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Acts 4:12,<\/a> John 4:16).<\/p>\n<p>The American Heritage Dictionary defines Mysticism as:<em>\u00a0 &#8216;Belief in <strong>direct experience<\/strong> of transcendent reality or God, especially <strong>by means of contemplation and asceticism <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">instead of rational thought<\/span>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span class=\"azure\">M<\/span>ysticism<\/strong> is an attempt to <span style=\"color: #000000;\">gain ultimate knowledge of God<\/span> by a <strong>direct experience that bypasses the mind<\/strong>. The strong influence of <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Catholic mysticism<\/span> has helped immensely to transform the <a href=\"http:\/\/christiananswers.net\/menu-ar1.html#new-age\">New Age Movement<\/a> from being merely a counter-culture sub-culture to becoming a new source of spiritual vision for the world. <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Catholic mysticism<\/span> has very effectively and subtly invaded<\/span> many facets of life without being recognized or critically examined.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/christiananswers.net\/q-eden\/mysticism-bennett.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christiananswers<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Mysticism, unity with God<\/strong> is practiced in <span style=\"color: #993300;\">New Age, <strong>Roman Catholicism<\/strong>, Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism), Islam (the Sufi sect), Taoism &amp; is also found in Hinduism.<\/span> As you can notice mysticism would help <strong>unite many religions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 377px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/b\/bf\/Whirlingdervishes.JPG\/330px-Whirlingdervishes.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"259\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">These are men performing &#8216;Sufi whirling&#8217; a form of physically active meditation<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Catholic Mysticism<\/strong> is being promoted and taught by many Christian churches &amp; ministries, like: (New Apostolic Reformation -NAR) <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170427233041\/http:\/\/mywordlikefire.com\/2012\/11\/11\/15897\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike<\/a> Bickel&#8217;s<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160428104633\/https:\/\/store.ihopkc.org\/fire-within\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> IHOP<\/a> churches<\/strong>,\u00a0 Emergent Rick Warren\/<strong>Saddle back Church<\/strong> (Be aware of churches that use Warren&#8217;s books &amp; his<strong> inner healing<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8216;Celebrate Recovery&#8217;), also (NAR) <strong>Bethel Church<\/strong> of Bill Johnson, (NAR) Rick Joyner&#8217;s <strong>Morning Star Church<\/strong>, The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/blog\/?p=9914\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baptist Standard<\/a> etc. &amp; by teachers like New Calvinist John Piper (who promotes Richard Foster &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/apprising.org\/2011\/05\/30\/john-piper-rick-warren-foster-williardism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rick Warren<\/a>, the practice of lectio divina, etc), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/misguidedshepherds.htm\">David Jeremiah, Chuck Swindoll<\/a>, Rob Bell, John Crowder, Patricia King, Max Lucado, Beth Moore, Mark Virkler, Luis &amp; Kevin Palau,\u00a0 etc.<\/p>\n<p>Many are recommending the <strong>books of Catholic Mystics like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Teresa_of_%C3%81vila\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teresa de Avila<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gcno.org\/book-reviews-1\/the-practice-of-the-presence-of-god\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brother Lawrence<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_of_the_Cross\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John of the Cross<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/blog\/?p=4000\">Thomas a Kempis<\/a>, <\/strong>(His book &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Imitation_of_Christ\">Imitation of Christ<\/a>&#8216; influenced Ignatius Loyola &amp; it&#8217;s still used as spiritual exercise by Jesuits. The book places emphasis on the devotion to the <a href=\"https:\/\/justthebook.wordpress.com\/2008\/07\/19\/the-real-presence-in-the-eucharist-part-4-thomas-a-kempis-the-imitation-of-christ\/\">Eucharist<\/a> as key element of spiritual life),<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ignatius_of_Loyola#Early_life\"><strong> Ignatius of Loyola<\/strong><\/a> <strong>( <\/strong>a Crypt-Jew that practiced kabbalah &amp; founder of the Jesuits); The confessions of <strong>St. Augustine<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/ivarfjeld.com\/2013\/11\/22\/drama-around-skull-and-bones-of-thomas-aquinas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Thomas Aquinas;<\/a> Francis de Sales,\u00a0 St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Anne Catherine Emmerich <\/strong>(Mel <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jesus-is-savior.com\/Evils%20in%20America\/Hellivision\/passion-antichrist.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gibson<\/a>&#8216;s inspiration for &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210511015943\/http:\/\/www.crossroad.to\/articles2\/04\/passion.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Passion of the Christ<\/a>&#8216; -with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.watch-unto-prayer.org\/cast.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">porn<\/a> stars)<strong>, Henry Suso, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccel.org\/ccel\/guyon\">Madame Guyon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Julian_of_Norwich\">Julian of Norwich<\/a>, <\/strong>Catholic priest<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/christianstandard.com\/2015\/02\/the-struggles-of-henri\/\">Henri Nouwen<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/newwaysministryblog.wordpress.com\/2012\/07\/19\/on-coming-out-anderson-cooper-henri-nouwen-and-raymond-alikpala\/\">1<\/a>) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/blog\/?p=1355\">2<\/a>),<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/merton.htm\">Thomas Merton<\/a>, (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180416132358\/http:\/\/www.thomasmertonsociety.org:80\/altany2.htm\">1<\/a>), <\/strong>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/blog\/?p=18379\">Pope Francis &amp; Merton<\/a>), <strong>father Thomas Dubay, <\/strong>contemplatives<strong> Thomas Keating and Basil Pennington <\/strong>(both Catholic monks).<\/p>\n<p>And also books, videos, etc. of other non-Catholic, but Christians, or New Agers mystics &amp; Contemplatives like\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/blog\/?s=Richard+Foster&amp;search=Search\">Richard Foster<\/a><\/strong> (founder of Renovare &amp; a disciple of mystic Catholic monk <strong>Thomas Merton<\/strong>), (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/richardfoster.htm\">1<\/a>) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/blog\/?tag=thomas-merton\">2<\/a>),\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/blog\/?p=2515\"><strong>Gary Thomas<\/strong><\/a>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/dallaswillard.htm\">Dallas Willard<\/a><\/strong>, Anglican <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/blog\/?p=16466\">father Gilbert<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/yancey.htm\">Philip Yancey<\/a>, many from the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240717231451\/http:\/\/www.thenewmystics.com\/Groups\/1000036249\/Home_Page_of\/Upcoming_Events\/Mystical_Schools\/Mystical_Schools.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Crowder<\/a>, contemplative <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/blog\/?p=18937\">David Benner<\/a>, feminine spiritualist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/suemonkkidd.htm\">Sue Monk Kidd<\/a>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/themessage.htm\">Eugene Peterson<\/a><\/strong> author of the non bible &#8216;The Message&#8217;, contemplative <strong>Beth Moore<\/strong>, also contemplative <strong>Mark Virkler<\/strong> a disciple of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Robert_Stevens\">John Robert Stevens<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/forum.culteducation.com\/read.php?5,4111\">1<\/a>), author of \u201c<em>4 Keys to Hearing God\u2019s Voice<\/em>\u201d, who also was\u00a0 influenced by <strong>Jesuit<\/strong> priests Matt &amp; Dennis Linn, and their <strong>Ignatian spirituality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 374px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151121055810\/http:\/\/images.elephantjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/Thomas-Merton-Dalai-Lama.png\" width=\"364\" height=\"253\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Catholic priest Thomas Merton &amp; Dalai Lama<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The goal of the New Age Movement has consistently been to bring in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/contemplativeterms.htm\">Age of Aquarius<\/a> when all will recognize &#8220;the god within themselves&#8221;. <strong>Catholic and Eastern mystics<\/strong> claim to discover God in the depths of their being (without Jesus). But the true Christian looks away from himself to the righteousness of Jesus Christ , who suffered in a real world &amp; died on a cross to pay for our sins.<\/p>\n<p>This false doctrine of<strong> Mysticism<\/strong> that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">includes Contemplative prayer<\/span>, mantra chanting (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">meditation<\/span>),<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> Lectio Divina<\/span>, to be still, etc, is being pushed mainly by <strong>The Emergent Church Movement, New Apostolic Reformation Movement &amp; The Ecumenical Movement<\/strong> , which are trying to unite us with Rome into <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>one world religion.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Catholic Mysticism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Catholic Mysticism started with what they call the &#8216;early fathers&#8217; &amp; mothers (nuns) also called the &#8216;<strong>Desert Fathers<\/strong>&#8216;,<strong> who were hermits and monks<\/strong> that lived a monastic life mainly in the deserts of Egypt in the 4th and 5th centuries AD. Some of them lived in isolation &amp; others adopted rules for communal life that evolved into larger monastic communities.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"style2\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><b>&#8220;In the early Middle Ages, there lived a group of hermits in the wilderness areas of the Middle East. They were known to history as the <span style=\"color: #800000;\">desert fathers<\/span>.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"style2\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">&#8220;They dwelt in small isolated communities for the purpose of devoting their lives completely to God without distraction. Common terms used for this movement are &#8220;spiritual formation,&#8221; &#8220;the silence,&#8221; &#8220;the stillness,&#8221; &#8220;ancient-wisdom,&#8221; &#8220;spiritual disciplines,&#8221; and many others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spiritual Formation:<\/strong> A movement that has provided a platform and a channel through which <strong>contemplative prayer<\/strong> is entering the church. Find spiritual formation being used, and in nearly every case you will find contemplative spirituality. In fact, <strong>contemplative spirituality<\/strong> is the heartbeat of the spiritual formation movement. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/desertfathers.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lighthouse Trails<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mysticism and God&#039;s Word with Mike &amp; Ray - Part 1\" width=\"676\" height=\"507\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/htrF1N1NgLk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In his book, <strong><em>Sacred Pathways<\/em><\/strong>, Gary Thomas (also author of &#8216;Sacred Marriage&#8217;) instructs readers:<\/p>\n<p>It is particularly difficult to describe this type of prayer in writing, as it is best taught in person. In general however, <strong>centering prayer works like this<\/strong>: <strong>Choose a word (Jesus or Father, for example) as a focus<\/strong> for contemplative prayer.<strong> Repeat the word silently in your mind<\/strong> for a set amount of time (say, twenty minutes) until your heart seems to be repeating the word by itself, just as naturally and involuntarily as breathing. (p. 185). <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250318003604\/https:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/newsletter060908.htm\">Lighthousetrails<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus instructed us: &#8221; <em>When ye <strong>pray,<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800000;\">use <strong>not<\/strong> vain repetitions, as the heathen do<\/span>: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking<\/em>\u201d (<a class=\"rtBibleRef\" href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/kjv1900\/Matt%206.7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-reference=\"Matt 6.7\" data-version=\"kjv1900\" data-purpose=\"bible-reference\">Matthew 6:7, KJV<\/a>). The word <i>vain<\/i> means \u201cempty\u201d or \u201cuseless\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Ancient mysticism has entered in the church<\/strong><\/span> which is Satan old deceptions re-packaged. These movements promoting Mysticism are using familiar Christian words like for example the word <strong>Meditation<\/strong>, but the meditation they practice <strong>got<\/strong> <strong>nothing to do<\/strong> with the <strong>biblical meditation<\/strong>, has to do instead with <strong>chanting a mantra over &amp; over verbally or mentally to <span style=\"color: #993300;\">empty their minds<\/span> to an <span style=\"color: #993300;\">alpha state<\/span> to induce a trance or an altered state of consciousness.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For those not familiar with what the \u201calpha brain patterns\u201d are, following we have two descriptions:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">-Mystical states of consciousness happen in the alpha state<\/span> . . .
