When you ask Christians, who is the destroyer<\/strong> mentioned in the Bible, some will tell you the destroyer is God the Father, others say is Jesus, or an angel of death, but some others (me included) believe the destroyer<\/strong><\/span> is no other than Satan<\/span>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

But what does the bible really says? Let us find out :<\/p>\n

For the Lord<\/span> will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord<\/span><\/span> will<\/strong> pass over the door and not allow <\/span>the destroyer<\/strong><\/span> (H7843<\/a>) to come<\/strong>into<\/span> your houses<\/strong> to strike you. <\/i>Exodus 12:23<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Some may think that was God who killed the firstborn, but because of the verb \u201callow or permit\u201d it clearly suggest that the destroyer is someone other than the Lord.<\/p>\n

– To avoid misunderstandings when we read the Bible, but specially when studying the Old Testament\u00a0 it is important to know that the same way that English & any other language has idioms (figure of speech), the biblical languages (Hebrew & Greek) also had idioms, colloquialisms & word usages that are distinctive to them, and that those familiar with the language would understand.<\/p>\n

Theologians (E.W Bullinger, Macnight, Jackson, etc.) agree that:
\n\u201cActive verbs<\/span> were used by the Hebrews<\/span> to express, not the doing<\/strong>, but the permission<\/span> of the thing which the agent is said to do.\u201d In Exodus, the Lord gave Moses instructions concerning the Passover: \u201cAnd when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike<\/strong> the land of Egypt.\u201d Read literally,<\/strong> this verse says that it is the Lord who will \u201cstrike\u201d the firstborn of Egypt dead. The verse, however, is an idiom<\/span><\/span>. According to Jackson, \u201cIt is fairly well known<\/strong> among advanced Bible students that there is a common idiom (figure of speech)<\/strong> in sacred literature, by which God is said to actively do that which, in reality, He merely allows<\/span>\u2026” While many verses in the Bible can be read literally, reading every verse literally will result in a wrong understanding of the nature of God<\/em>\u201d. – Bullinger, E.W. (1898), Figures of Speech Used in the Bible (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker, 1968 reprint).<\/p>\n

This is one of the reasons that Gnostics (Masons, Kabbalists, etc), and many others, wrongfully attack God\u2019s character or think that God in the Old Testament was harsh or even evil. When in reality it is people’s own sin<\/span> that opens the door to the destroyer & to judgment.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The nations at that time of the Old Testament were very wicked, the Canaanites were practicing child sacrifice, witchcraft, sexual immorality, bestiality, etc (Gen,6:1-6<\/a>, Lev.18:3-23 & 24-29<\/a>). God was patience with them for hundreds of years<\/a>, until the time God had to judge their terrible sins. God had purposefully delayed the conquest of Canaan<\/a> (which had giants<\/a>) until their sin<\/span> had reached a point<\/span> beyond recovery, or of\u00a0judgment<\/strong><\/span> Gen.15:16<\/a>. Other translations<\/a> say “until they become so wicked that they must be punished<\/em>“.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Nonetheless God is the Creator,<\/strong> He is Just & All knowing, & He alone Has the right and authority to give life and to take it away (Job 1:21; 12:10; Acts 3:15; 17:25<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The Israelites were not without sin either, but it was the blood of the spotless lamb (a prototype of Jesus’ Sacrifice) applied by faith that saved them from the destroyer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

‘And when the angel<\/strong> stretched out His hand over Jerusalem to destroy it<\/span>, the Lord<\/span> relented from the destruction, and said to the angel<\/strong> who was destroying the people<\/span>, \u201cIt is enough; now restrain your hand<\/span>.\u201d 2 Samuel 24:16 & 2 Kings 19:35<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

The destroyer seems to be an angel<\/strong> & because of the above bible verses, many Christians & some Jews alike rightly believe the destroyer is an angel of death<\/strong>, an emissary of judgment<\/strong>. But it could also be a fallen angel that isn’t receiving direct orders from God, but that acts independently destroying and killing were he finds a legal right (open doors) to do so.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“The wicked<\/span> man<\/span> travails with pain all his days, <\/span>and numbered are the years stored up for the oppressor<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span>21 <\/sup>A dreadful sound is in his ears; <\/span>in prosperity the destroyer<\/strong> will come upon him<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>.” Job 15:20-21<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“Woe to <\/strong>you<\/span><\/span>, O destroyer<\/span><\/strong>, While you were not destroyed; And he who is treacherous, while others did not deal treacherously with him. As soon as you finish destroying,<\/strong> you will be destroyed<\/span><\/span>; As soon as you cease to deal treacherously, others will deal treacherously with you”. In Psalm 17:4 David<\/strong> a man after God’s heart said to Him <\/span>: “Concerning the works of men, <\/span>By <\/strong>the word of Your<\/strong> lips, <\/span>I have kept <\/strong>away from<\/span> the paths of the <\/strong>destroyer<\/strong> (H6530<\/a>).<\/span><\/div>\n

We also find the destroyer<\/strong> mentioned in the New Testament. And by the verse above & the next\u00a0 verse we know is a ‘he’, a person, not a force.<\/div>\n

By faith<\/strong> he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that he<\/span> who destroyed<\/span><\/strong> the firstborn<\/span> would not touch them. Hebrews 11:28<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 (Talking about Moses’ faith & the plagues- Exodus 12:23<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

1 Cor. 10:10<\/a> “Neither murmur, as some of them also murmured and were destroyed<\/span> (G662<\/em><\/a>= Apoll<\/strong>umi<\/em>) by<\/span> the destroyer<\/b><\/u>.” –<\/p>\n

The reference here is from Number 16<\/a>: 41-50, a plague of venomous serpents<\/span><\/strong> that killed thousands. Because of their sin<\/strong> they brought this plague upon them, but God found a way to save them by faith<\/span>, those who had faith in His words & acted upon them lived.<\/p>\n

Do not let anyone deceive you in any way. For that Day will not come unless a falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of destruction <\/strong>(G684<\/a>= ap\u014dl<\/strong>eia),<\/span> 2 Thes. 2:3<\/a>\u00a0 (Talking about the Antichrist)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Some other versions translate 1 Cor. 10:10: NIV: “And do not grumble, as some of them did–and were killed by the destroying <\/strong>angel<\/b><\/span>.”<\/div>\n

NLT: “And don’t grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the angel <\/b>of death<\/b>.”<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Jesus said: ‘The thief<\/span><\/strong> cometh not, but for to steal<\/strong>, and to kill, and to<\/strong> destroy<\/span><\/span><\/strong> (G662<\/em><\/a>= Greek word Apoll<\/strong>umi <\/em>): I<\/strong> am come<\/span> that they might have life<\/strong><\/span>, and that they might have it more abundantly<\/span>.’ – John 10:10<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to this verse in the book of John, Jesus is saying He is the life giver<\/span> in opposition<\/strong> or contrast to the destroyer<\/strong>, so we understand that Jesus is not the thief<\/strong> nor the destroyer, but Satan is! Jesus is comparing in this chapter the true & good shepherd (Him) with the thief & destroyer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Then was brought unto<\/strong> Him [Jesus<\/span>] one possessed<\/span> with a devil<\/span>, blind, and dumb<\/strong>: and He healed<\/span> him<\/strong>, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. (Matt.12:22 <\/a>)<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound<\/span><\/strong>, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?\u201d (Luke 13:16<\/a>)<\/p>\n

And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan<\/strong> hath desired to have you, that he may sift you<\/strong><\/span> as wheat: (Luke 22:31<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\u201cYe are of your father the devil,<\/strong> and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer<\/span><\/strong> from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him<\/strong>. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar<\/span><\/strong>, and the father of it.\u201d (John 8:44<\/a>)<\/p>\n

\u201cHow God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed<\/span> of the devil<\/strong>; for God was with him.\u201d (Acts 10:38<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil<\/strong><\/span>, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking<\/strong> whom he may devour<\/strong><\/span> (G2666<\/em><\/a>= Swallow up, destroy<\/strong>, consume<\/em>). (1 Peter 5:8<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\u201cWhoever practices sin<\/strong> is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning<\/strong>. For this purpose the Son of God was revealed, that He might destroy the works of the devil<\/strong>. <\/span>.\u201d 1 John 3:8<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There is no doubt that Satan (which means the adversary) is the thief that steals<\/strong>, kills & destroys<\/strong>. Jesus is the opposite<\/span>,<\/strong> He is the giver of abundant life<\/span> & destroys the evil works of the devil (1 John 3:8) & one day will destroy the devil or destroyer (Heb 2:14).<\/p>\n

But in the last book of the Bible the Destroyer is revealed<\/span><\/strong>, the book of Revelation<\/a> talks about a ruling spirit<\/span> (as king<\/strong> Luke 8:30-31<\/a><\/span>), a fallen angel<\/span> called the “Destroyer<\/span>,”<\/strong> who’s army ( locusts w\/tails like scorpions) is released from the abyss<\/strong> during God’s judgment on the last days.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The abyss or bottomless pit<\/strong> (G12<\/a>) is a place of darkness<\/strong> were demons are bound for a time until judgment day<\/strong> Luke 8:31<\/strong>; I Pet. 3:19; II Pet. 2:4; Jude 6<\/a> . Also from this abyss ascends the beast that makes war against<\/span> the 2 witnesses of God<\/strong> (Rev.11:7<\/a>).<\/div>\n
See also Revelation 17:8, 20:1-3<\/a>. This shows the Destroyer<\/strong> looks to destroy or make war against God plans & His people<\/span>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Jesus<\/span> asked him, saying, \u201cWhat is your name?\u201d <\/span><\/span>And he said, \u201cLegion,\u201d because many demons<\/strong> had entered him. <\/span> 31\u00a0<\/sup>And they begged Him that He would not command them to go<\/span> out into the abyss<\/span><\/strong> (G12<\/a>). Luke 8:30-31<\/a>.

They had as king<\/u> over them the angel<\/u><\/span><\/b> of the bottomless pit <\/b>(G12<\/a>), whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek his name is Apoll<\/strong>yon (G623<\/a>=destroyer<\/span><\/strong>). Rev. 9:11<\/a><\/div>\n

The beast<\/span>, which you saw, was, and is not, and is to ascend out of <\/span>the bottomless pit<\/strong> (G12<\/a>) and go to destruction<\/span>.<\/strong><\/span>Those who dwell on the earth whose names are not written in the Book of Life<\/strong> from the foundation of the world will marvel when they see the beast that was, and is not, and is to come. Rev.17:8<\/a> & 11.

I believe God as a loving Father protects people from harms of the enemy many times, even when we don’t deserve it. He is full of compassion, waiting for us to repent,<\/strong> but when time passes on and we continue in sin<\/span> & we don’t repent, judgment has to come<\/strong>. Then God just removes His hedge of protection from around us & allows<\/span> us to receive the consequences of our own actions & choices.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But God doesn’t want<\/strong> us to get hurt by the Destroyer<\/span>, that’s why He advises us:<\/p>\n

–Not to be ignorant<\/span><\/strong> of Satan’s devices <\/strong>so he can not take advantage of us. (2 Co. 2:11<\/a>)<\/p>\n

-To be sober, be<\/strong> <\/span>vigilant<\/span> because <\/strong>the devil seeks<\/strong> whom he may devour <\/span>(G2666<\/em><\/a>= destroy<\/strong><\/span>, consume<\/em>).<\/span> (1 Peter 5:8<\/a>)<\/p>\n

–To put on the whole armor of God<\/span><\/strong> to be able to stand against the wiles (methods) of the devil. (Eph.6:11-20<\/a>), Etc.<\/p>\n

But again same as Psalm 91<\/a>,<\/strong> this armor is not<\/span> a magic formula, that when needed we pretend or reenact putting on the armor for protection. Please realize that JESUS IS our Armor!<\/span>\u00a0 Without Jesus & a relationship with Him there is no armor. “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ<\/strong><\/span>, and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts<\/strong>.<\/span><\/em>” (Rom.13:14<\/a>). The armor is about abiding<\/strong> in Him!<\/span><\/p>\n

vs.14-The belt of truth<\/b>=\u00a0 Jesus is the Truth<\/strong> (Jn. 14:6<\/a>) His Word is truth, \u201cSanctify them by Your truth: Your word is truth.\u201d<\/i> (Jn 17:17<\/a>), He is the truth that make us free (Jn.8:32-44<\/a>). Satan the destroyer is the father of lies. Sons imitate their fathers. This is why we always need to speak truth.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

vs.14-Breastplate of righteousness<\/strong>= This piece covers the heart<\/strong> (Prov. 4:23<\/a>) & vital organs. Jesus is our righteousness!<\/strong> (Jer.23:6<\/a>, 2 Cor.5:21, Phil.3:9<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n

vs.15-Feet fitted w\/gospel of peace<\/strong> = We need to stand in His truth (His words, His doctrine) & bring it to others. Jesus is the good news or gospel, He is\u00a0 the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6<\/a>), & He is our peace (Rom.5:1<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

vs.16-S<\/strong>hield of faith<\/strong>= He is our shield (Psalm 119:114<\/a>). Like Jesus did in the dessert, we also believe the Word of God (Rom. 10:17<\/a>) & use it to extinguish the lies of the enemy<\/span>. He & His Word is our protection! Do you understand why the enemy needs us away from God & His Word?
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

vs.17-The helmet of salvation<\/strong>= Protects the mind<\/strong>. The name ‘Jesus’ means Salvation (Matt. 1:21<\/a>), He is our salvation! We trust Him and are not afraid (Isa.12:2<\/a>). He who have the son has life. (1 Jn.5:11-1<\/a>)<\/p>\n

vs. 17-The Sword of the Spirit<\/strong>= Which is the Word of God (Jesus is the Word, Jn.1:1). We need to know His Word so we can use it to know Him better, to find direction (Ps. 119:105<\/a>), discernment (Heb.4:12<\/a>), spiritual food, etc.<\/p>\n

vs.18-Pray in the Spirit<\/strong>, always with all kinds of prayer and supplication.= This part of the armor is to be<\/span> led<\/span> by the Holy Spirit<\/strong> so we can do things according to the will of God.(Rom.8:26-27<\/a>). Prayer<\/strong> brings us into communion and fellowship with God.\u00a0 Prayer holds all the other pieces of the armor in place.<\/span>
