{"id":6981,"date":"2020-04-01T05:00:10","date_gmt":"2020-04-01T09:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=6981"},"modified":"2026-05-11T10:30:56","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T14:30:56","slug":"who-is-the-destroyer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=6981","title":{"rendered":"Who is the Destroyer?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you ask Christians, who is<strong> the destroyer<\/strong> mentioned in the Bible, some will tell you the destroyer is God the Father, others say is Jesus, or an angel of death, but some others (me included) believe the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>destroyer<\/strong><\/span> is no other than <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Satan<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But what does the bible really says? Let us find out :<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<div><span id=\"yiv5851444215ydp2cb0dce9en-NKJV-1840\" class=\"yiv5851444215ydp2cb0dce9text yiv5851444215ydp2cb0dce9Exod-12-23\"><span id=\"en-MEV-1840\" class=\"text Exod-12-23\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-1840\" class=\"text Exod-12-23\">For the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span> will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord<\/span><\/span> will<\/strong> pass over the door and<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> not allow <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>the destroyer<\/strong><\/span> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingjamesbibledictionary.com\/StrongsNo\/H7843\/destroyer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">H7843<\/a>) <strong>to come<\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">into<\/span><strong> your houses<\/strong> to strike you<i>. <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus+12.23&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Exodus 12:23<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Some may think that was God who killed the firstborn, but because of the verb \u201callow or permit\u201d it clearly suggest that the destroyer is someone other than the Lord.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; To avoid misunderstandings when we read the Bible, but specially when studying the Old Testament\u00a0 it is important to know that the same way that English &amp; any other language has idioms (figure of speech), the biblical languages (Hebrew &amp; Greek) also had idioms, colloquialisms &amp; word usages that are distinctive to them, and that those familiar with the language would understand.<\/p>\n<p>Theologians (E.W Bullinger, Macnight, Jackson, etc.) agree that:<br \/>\n\u201c<em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Active verbs<\/span> were used by the <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Hebrews<\/span> to express,<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong> not the doing<\/strong>, but the permission<\/span> of the thing which the agent is said to do.\u201d In Exodus, the Lord gave Moses instructions concerning the Passover: \u201cAnd when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when<strong> I strike<\/strong> the land of Egypt.\u201d <strong>Read literally,<\/strong> this verse says that it is the Lord who will \u201cstrike\u201d the firstborn of Egypt dead. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\">The verse, however, is an idiom<\/span><\/span>. According to Jackson, <strong>\u201cIt is fairly well known<\/strong> among advanced Bible students that there is a common <strong>idiom (figure of speech)<\/strong> in sacred literature, by which God is said to actively do that <span style=\"color: #800000;\">which, in reality, He merely allows<\/span>\u2026&#8221; While many verses in the Bible can be read literally, reading every verse literally will result in a wrong understanding of the nature of God<\/em>\u201d. &#8211; Bullinger, E.W. (1898), Figures of Speech Used in the Bible (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker, 1968 reprint).<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the reasons that Gnostics (Masons, Kabbalists, etc), and many others, wrongfully attack God\u2019s character or think that God in the Old Testament was harsh or even evil. <strong>When in reality it is<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> people&#8217;s own sin<\/span> that opens the door to the destroyer &amp; to judgment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The nations at that time of the Old Testament were very wicked, the Canaanites were practicing child sacrifice, witchcraft, sexual immorality, bestiality, etc (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Gen.%206%3A1-6&amp;version=NKJV;AKJV;MEV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gen,6:1-6<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Leviticus%2018&amp;version=NKJV;AKJV;MEV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lev.18:3-23 &amp; 24-29<\/a>). God was patience with them for<a href=\"https:\/\/uasvbible.org\/2025\/04\/04\/young-people-ask-why-would-a-loving-god-command-the-killing-of-entire-nations-in-the-old-testament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> hundreds of years<\/a>, until the time God had to judge their terrible sins. God had purposefully delayed the conquest of <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/topical\/c\/canaanite_clans.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canaan<\/a> (which had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Numbers%2013%3A31-33&amp;version=NKJV;AKJV;MEV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">giants<\/a>) <span style=\"color: #800000;\">until their sin<\/span> <span style=\"color: #800000;\">had reached a point<\/span> beyond recovery, or of<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u00a0judgment<\/strong><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis%2015%3A12-16&amp;version=NKJV;AKJV;MEV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gen.15:16<\/a>. Other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis%2015%3A16&amp;version=AMP,GNT,CEV,NTV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">translations<\/a> say &#8220;<em>until they become so wicked that they must be punished<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Nonetheless God is the <strong>Creator,<\/strong> He is Just &amp; All knowing, &amp; He alone Has the right and authority to give life and to take it away (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=%20Job%201%3A21%3B%2012%3A10%3B%20Acts%203%3A15%3B%2017%3A25&amp;version=NKJV;AKJV;MEV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Job 1:21; 12:10; Acts 3:15; 17:25<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The Israelites were not without sin either, but it was the blood of the spotless lamb (a prototype of Jesus&#8217; Sacrifice) applied by faith that saved them from<strong> the destroyer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"content-box-1\" data-keyword-id6663=\"\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>&#8216;And when the<strong> angel<\/strong> stretched out His hand over Jerusalem to <span style=\"color: #800000;\">destroy it<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">the Lord<\/span> relented from the destruction, and said to the <strong>angel<\/strong> who was<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> destroying the people<\/span>, \u201cIt is enough; now<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> restrain your hand<\/span>.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+Samuel+24%3A16%2C++2Kings+19%3A35&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2 Samuel 24:16 &amp; 2 Kings 19:35<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>The destroyer seems to be <strong>an angel<\/strong> &amp; because of the above bible verses, many Christians &amp; some Jews alike rightly<strong> believe the destroyer is an angel of death<\/strong>, an emissary of<strong> judgment<\/strong>. But it could also be a fallen angel that isn&#8217;t receiving direct orders from God, but that acts independently destroying and killing were he finds a legal right (open doors) to do so.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>&#8220;<span id=\"en-MEV-13224\" class=\"text Job-15-20\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The wicked<\/span> <span style=\"color: #800000;\">man<\/span> travails with pain all his days, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Job-15-20\">and numbered are the years stored up for <strong>the oppressor<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-MEV-13225\" class=\"text Job-15-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21 <\/sup>A dreadful sound is in his ears; <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Job-15-21\">in prosperity <strong>the destroyer<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800000;\">will come upon him<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>.&#8221; Job 15:20-21<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"content-box-1\" data-keyword-id6663=\"\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Woe to <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">you<\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">, O destroyer<\/span><\/strong>, While you were not destroyed; And he who is treacherous, while others did not deal treacherously with him.<strong> As soon as you finish destroying,<\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\">you will be destroyed<\/span><\/span>; As soon as you cease to deal treacherously, others will deal treacherously with you&#8221;. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah%2033%3A1&amp;version=MEV,AKJV,NKJV,RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 33:1.<\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-keyword-id6663=\"\"><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div data-keyword-id6663=\"\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-14108\" class=\"text Ps-17-4\"><span class=\"body_text\">In Psalm 17:4 <strong>David<\/strong> a man after God&#8217;s heart said to Him <\/span>: &#8220;Concerning the works of men, <\/span><span class=\"text Ps-17-4\"><strong>By <\/strong>the word of <strong>Your<\/strong> lips, <\/span><span class=\"text Ps-17-4\">I have <strong>kept <\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">away from<\/span> the paths of <strong>the <\/strong><strong>destroyer<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingjamesbibledictionary.com\/StrongsNo\/H6530\/destroyer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">H6530<\/a>).<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-keyword-id6663=\"\"><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div data-keyword-id6663=\"\">\n<blockquote>\n<div data-keyword-id6663=\"\">&#8216;The lion has come up from his thicket, and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #800000;\">the destroyer<\/span> of the nations<\/strong> is <strong>on <span style=\"color: #800000;\">his<\/span> way<\/strong>. <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">He<\/span><\/strong> has gone forth from his place to make your<strong> land desolate.<\/strong> And your cities shall be laid waste without an inhabitant.&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Jeremiah+4%3A7&amp;version=MEV;AKJV;NKJV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jer. 4:7<\/a><\/div>\n<div data-keyword-id6663=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div data-keyword-id6663=\"\">Who else could be <strong>the destroyer of the nations <\/strong>but Satan?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div data-keyword-id6663=\"\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div data-keyword-id6663=\"\">\n<blockquote>\n<div data-keyword-id6663=\"\">&#8220;<span id=\"en-MEV-17941\" class=\"text Isa-14-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>How are<\/span><span id=\"en-MEV-17941\" class=\"text Isa-14-12\"> you fallen from heaven,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-14-12\">O <strong>Lucifer<\/strong>, son of the morning (dawn)!<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Isa-14-12\">How you are cut down to the ground,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-14-12\">you <strong>who<\/strong> <strong>weaken the nations!<\/strong> . . .<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div data-keyword-id6663=\"\"><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Isa-14-12\"><span id=\"en-MEV-17941\" class=\"text Isa-14-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16<\/sup><\/span> <span id=\"en-MEV-17945\" class=\"text Isa-14-16\">Those who see you shall stare at you<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Isa-14-16\">and ponder over you:<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Isa-14-16\">\u201cIs this the man who <strong>made the earth<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span class=\"text Isa-14-16\">to tremble and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">shook kingdoms<\/span>,<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-MEV-17946\" class=\"text Isa-14-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"color: #800000;\">who made the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">world as a wilderness<\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span class=\"text Isa-14-17\">and <strong>destroyed<\/strong> its cities,<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Isa-14-17\">who did not open the house of his prisoners?\u201d<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah+14%3A12-17&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaiah 14:12-<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div data-keyword-id6663=\"\"><!--more--><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div>We also find the <strong>destroyer<\/strong> mentioned in the New Testament. And by the verse above &amp; the next\u00a0 verse we know is a &#8216;he&#8217;, a person, not a force.<\/div>\n<div><!--more--><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"content-box-1\" data-keyword-id6663=\"\">\n<div id=\"Replacep\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"result-wrap\">By <strong>faith<\/strong> he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">he<\/span> who <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">destroyed<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800000;\">the firstborn<\/span> would not touch them. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Hebrews+11%3A28&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hebrews 11:28<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 (Talking about Moses&#8217; faith &amp; the plagues- <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus+12.23&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Exodus 12:23<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingjamesbibledictionary.com\/BibleVerse\/1Corinthians\/10\/10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 Cor. 10:10<\/a> &#8220;Neither murmur, as some of them also murmured and were <span style=\"color: #800000;\">destroyed<\/span> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingjamesbibledictionary.com\/StrongsNo\/G622\/destroy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>G662<\/em><\/a><em>= <strong>Apoll<\/strong>umi<\/em>) <span style=\"color: #800000;\">by<\/span> <u><b>the destroyer<\/b><\/u>.&#8221; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>The reference here is from <a class=\"yiv5851444215\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Num.16&amp;version=NKJV;AKJV;MEV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Number 16<\/a>: 41-50, a plague of <strong>venomous <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">serpents<\/span><\/strong> that killed thousands. Because of their <strong>sin<\/strong> they brought this plague upon them, but God found a way to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">save them by faith<\/span>, those who had faith in His words &amp; acted upon them lived.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-MEV-29665\" class=\"text 2Thess-2-3\">Do not let anyone deceive you in any way. For that Day will not come unless a falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of<strong> destruction <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200224172817\/http:\/\/www.kingjamesbibledictionary.com:80\/StrongsNo\/G684\/Perdition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">G684<\/a>= <strong>ap\u014dl<\/strong>eia),<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+Thessalonians+2%3A3&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1960\">2 Thes. 2:3<\/a>\u00a0 (Talking about the Antichrist)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>Some other versions translate 1 Cor. 10:10: NIV: &#8220;And do not grumble, as some of them did&#8211;and were killed by the <strong>destroying <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>angel<\/b><\/span>.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>NLT: &#8220;And don&#8217;t grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the <b>angel <\/b><b>of death<\/b>.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Jesus said: &#8216;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The thief<\/span><\/strong> cometh not, but for to<strong> steal<\/strong>, and to<strong> kill, and to<\/strong> <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\">destroy<\/span><\/span><\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingjamesbibledictionary.com\/StrongsNo\/G622\/destroy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>G662<\/em><\/a><em>= Greek word <strong>Apoll<\/strong>umi <\/em>):<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong> I<\/strong> am come<\/span> that they might have <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>life<\/strong><\/span>, and that they might have it more <span style=\"color: #800000;\">abundantly<\/span>.&#8217; &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%2010%3A10&amp;version=MEV;AKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John 10:10<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<p>According to this verse in the book of John, Jesus is saying He is the<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> life giver<\/span><strong> in opposition<\/strong> or contrast to the <strong>destroyer<\/strong>, so we understand that Jesus is not <strong>the thief<\/strong> nor the destroyer, but Satan is! Jesus is comparing in this chapter the true &amp; good shepherd (Him) with the thief &amp; destroyer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>Then was <strong>brought unto<\/strong> Him [<span style=\"color: #800000;\">Jesus<\/span>] one<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> possessed<\/span> with a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">devil<\/span>, blind, and dumb<\/strong>: and <span style=\"color: #800000;\">He healed<\/span><strong> him<\/strong>, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matt.12%3A22+&amp;version=MEV;AKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt.12:22 <\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, <strong>whom Satan hath <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">bound<\/span><\/strong>, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+13%3A16&amp;version=MEV;AKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luke 13:16<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, <strong>Satan<\/strong> hath desired to have you, that he may <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>sift you<\/strong><\/span> as wheat: (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke%2022%3A31&amp;version=MEV;AKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luke 22:31<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYe are of your father <strong>the devil,<\/strong> and the lusts of your father ye will do. <strong>He was a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">murderer<\/span><\/strong> from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because <strong>there is no truth in him<\/strong>.
