The Lord a Fortress in Adversity<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.<\/p>\n

1 In You, O Lord<\/strong>, I put my trust<\/strong><\/span>;
\nLet me never be ashamed;
\nDeliver me<\/span><\/strong> in Your righteousness<\/span>.
\n2
\nBow down Your ear to me,
\nDeliver me<\/strong><\/span> speedily;
\nBe my rock of refuge<\/span><\/span><\/strong>,
\nA fortress of defense<\/span><\/strong> to save me<\/span>.<\/p>\n

\nFor You are my rock and my fortress<\/span>;
\nTherefore, for Your name\u2019s sake<\/strong><\/span>,
\nLead me and guide me<\/span>.
\n4
\nPull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me,
\nFor You are my strength.<\/span>
\n5<\/p>\n

Into Your hand I commit my spirit;
\nYou have redeemed me<\/span>, O Lord God of truth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nI have hated those who regard useless idols;
\nBut I trust in the Lord.<\/span><\/strong>
\n7 <\/strong>
\nI will be glad and rejoice in Your mercy<\/span>,
\nFor You have considered my trouble;
\nYou have known my soul in adversities<\/span>,
\n8
\nAnd have not shut me up into the hand of the enemy;<\/strong>
\nYou have set my feet in a wide place.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\nHave mercy on me<\/strong>, O Lord, for I am in trouble;
\nMy eye wastes away with grief,
\nYes, my soul and my body!
\n10
\nFor my life is spent with grief,
\nAnd my years with sighing;
\nMy strength fails because of my iniquity,
\nAnd my bones waste away.
\n11
\nI am a reproach among all my enemies,
\nBut especially among my neighbors,
\nAnd am repulsive to my acquaintances;
\nThose who see me outside flee from me.
\n12<\/p>\n

I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind;
\nI am like a broken vessel.
\n13
\nFor I hear the slander of many;
\nFear is on every side;
\nWhile they take counsel together against me,
\nThey scheme to take away my life.<\/p>\n

But as for me, I trust in You, O Lord;<\/strong><\/span>
\nI say, \u201cYou are my God.\u201d<\/strong><\/span>
\n15
\nMy times are in Your hand<\/span>;
\nDeliver me from the hand of my enemies,<\/strong>
\nAnd from those who persecute me.<\/strong>
\n16
\nMake Your face shine upon Your servant;<\/span><\/strong>
\nSave me for Your mercies\u2019 sake.
\n17
\nDo not let me be ashamed, O Lord, for I have called upon You;<\/strong><\/span>
\nLet the wicked be ashamed;
\nLet them be silent in the grave.
\n18
\nLet the lying lips be put to silence,
\nWhich speak insolent things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.<\/p>\n

\nOh, how great is Your goodness<\/strong>,<\/span>
\nWhich You have laid up for those who fear You<\/span>,
\nWhich You have prepared for those who trust in You<\/span>
\nIn the presence of the sons of men!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nYou shall hide them in the secret place of Your presence<\/span><\/strong>
\nFrom the plots of man<\/span><\/strong>;
\nYou shall keep them secretly in a pavilion
\nFrom the strife of tongues.<\/p>\n

\nBlessed be the Lord,<\/span>
\nFor He has shown me His marvelous kindness<\/span> in a strong city!
\n22
\nFor I said<\/strong> in my haste,
\n\u201cI am cut off from before Your eyes\u201d;
\nNevertheless<\/span> You heard the voice of my supplications<\/strong><\/span>
\nWhen I cried out to You<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nOh, love the Lord, all you His saints!<\/span>
\nFor the Lord preserves the faithful,<\/strong><\/span>
\nAnd fully repays the proud person.<\/p>\n

24
\nBe of good courage<\/strong>,<\/span>
\nAnd He shall strengthen your heart,<\/span><\/span>
\nAll you<\/strong> who hope in the Lord.<\/span><\/p>\n

Psalm 31 is a prayer from king David, a man after God’s own heart<\/strong>, (Acts 13:22<\/a>), were he expresses his trust in God for deliverance and protection. But David was far from perfect. When we read about his life in the Bible we notice he accomplished great things for the Lord, but he also had big failures, still he is called and remembered as a man after God’s own heart, even many years later, (in the New Testament) because he had a deep desire to follow God\u2019s will<\/strong> and do \u201ceverything\u201d God wanted him to do. From this man\u2019s descendants God raised a Savior, our Lord Jesus, according to His promises.<\/p>\n

God looks at the\u00a0hearts<\/span> of men, He knows which ones are towards Him and that is what he saw on David. When God sent Samuel to David’s house to choose a king , Samuel thought David’s oldest brother Eliab was surely the Lord’s anointed, (Sam.16:6-7<\/a>) but the Lord said to Samuel : “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart<\/strong><\/span>.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

We notice David’s emotions, he pleads for deliverance, he\u00a0 was in distress & afraid (vs.9-13), but he also remembers God has previously shown him His marvelous kindness (vs.21) & starts praising & blessing the Lord. At the end (vs. 23-24) David ends up exhorting us believers to love the Lord & put our hope in Him. We see that is normal to have emotions in the midst of trials but the key is not to let those emotions keep us down, because we have victory in the Lord.<\/p>\n

This Psalm teaches us to rely on God in times of adversity or persecution. Let us not forget to put our trust in the Lord<\/strong>, He indeed is our rock and our fortress of defense. Hallelujah!<\/p>\n

Psalm 31 Outline<\/strong><\/p>\n

I. (vs. 1-2) In times of trouble take refuge in the LORD<\/strong>
\nII. (3-6) Trust in your Redeemer to lead you & guide you<\/span>
\nIII. (7-9) Be glad & rejoice in His mercy<\/strong>.
\nIV. (10-14) Don’t despair trust in the Lord, He is your God.<\/span>
\nV. (15-18) He will\u00a0 deliver us.<\/strong>
\nVI. (19-22) Praise Him, great is His goodness!<\/span><\/strong>
\nVII. (23-24) Be of good courage & He shall strengthen your heart.<\/strong><\/p>\n
