{"id":8171,"date":"2020-06-01T00:07:46","date_gmt":"2020-06-01T04:07:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=8171"},"modified":"2026-02-11T09:45:23","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T14:45:23","slug":"gospel-of-john-chap-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=8171","title":{"rendered":"Gospel of John- Chap. 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 1 of 17 in the series <a href=\"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?series=john\" class=\"series-95\" title=\"John\">John<\/a><\/div><p>Even all four gospels are complementary and all tell about the story of Jesus, the gospel of John is different from the gospel of Matthew, Mark &amp; Luke. The differences between these three Gospels and John&#8217;s include the language used, the timeline, the material covered, e.g. there is no record of the genealogy of Jesus&#8217; birth or childhood, but also there is a unique approach by John to the life and ministry of Jesus, giving emphasis to the Divine nature of our Lord Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Mathew, Mark &amp; Luke are called <strong>synoptic gospel<\/strong> since the 18th century because they include many of the same stories, often in a similar sequence and in very similar wording. The term synoptic is derived from a combination of the Greek words (syn = together) and (opsis = seeing) to indicate that the contents of these 3 Gospels can be viewed side-by-side.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The author of this book is John, one of the 12 apostles&#8217; of Jesus, &#8220;the disciple whom Jesus loved&#8221; (Jn.13:23, 19:26, 20:2, 21:7, 21:20 &amp; 24), also known as the son of Zebedee, and brother of James called &#8220;Son of Thunder&#8221; &amp; he wrote this book after the gospel or accounts of Matthew, Mark &amp; Luke, between A.D. 85-90, this was after the destruction of Jerusalem (70 A.D.), but before John was exiled to the Island of Patmos.<\/p>\n<p>To study and memorize better the first chapter of John, we can divided it in two main parts :<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Prologue: <strong>Who is Jesus<\/strong>&#8211; The Word Became Flesh (Jn.1:1-18)<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Beginning of Jesus&#8217; Ministry<\/strong> (Jn.1:19-51)\n<ul>\n<li>John the Baptist&#8217;s Testimony about Jesus (1:19-34)<\/li>\n<li>John&#8217;s Disciples Follow Jesus (1:35-42)<\/li>\n<li>Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael (1:43-51)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>1. Who is Jesus:<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Book or gospel (good news) of John begins declaring the Deity of Jesus Christ.\u00a0 (To listen go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Pe6eMQQIoqE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John- audio<\/a>)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>The Eternal Word<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1 <span style=\"color: #800000;\">In the beginning was the Word<\/span>, and the Word <strong>was with God<\/strong>, and <span style=\"color: #800000;\">the Word was God<\/span>. 2 <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">He<\/span><\/strong> was in the beginning with God. 3 <strong>All things were made through <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Him<\/span><\/strong>, and without <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Him<\/span> nothing was made that was made. 4 In <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Him<\/span> was life, and the <strong>life<\/strong> was the <strong>light<\/strong> of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it . <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+1&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960\">John 1:1-5<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text John-1-6\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">6\u00a0<\/sup>There was a man sent from God, whose name <i>was<\/i> John. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-26052\" class=\"text John-1-7\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">7\u00a0<\/sup>This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Light,<\/span> <strong>that all through <span style=\"color: #800000;\">him<\/span> might believe<\/strong>. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-26053\" class=\"text John-1-8\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">8\u00a0<\/sup>He was not that Light, but <i>was sent<\/i> to bear witness of that Light. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-26054\" class=\"text John-1-9\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">9\u00a0<\/sup>That was <span style=\"color: #800000;\">the <strong>true<\/strong> Light<\/span> which gives light to every man coming into the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-26055\" class=\"text John-1-10\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">10\u00a0<\/sup>He was in the world, and <strong>the world<\/strong> was made through <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Him<\/span>, and the world did not know Him. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-26056\" class=\"text John-1-11\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">11\u00a0<\/sup>He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-26057\" class=\"text John-1-12\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">12\u00a0<\/sup><strong>But as many as received <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Him<\/span><\/strong>, to them He gave the right to <strong>become children of God<\/strong>, to those <strong>who believe in <span style=\"color: #800000;\">His<\/span> name<\/strong>: <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-26058\" class=\"text John-1-13\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">13\u00a0<\/sup>who were <strong>born,<\/strong> <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">not<\/span> of<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man<\/span><\/strong>, but <strong>of <span style=\"color: #800000;\">God<\/span>.\u00a0<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+1&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960\">John 1:6-13.<\/a><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>He<\/strong> (the Word) existed from the beginning, He was with God &amp; He was God, everything was created through Him. (<a href=\"https:\/\/classic.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+1&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gen. 1<\/a>: 3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24 &amp; 26). God created everything into existence not with a magic wand or &#8216;sparks&#8217; in His fingers but through the<strong> \u201cWord\u201d.<\/strong> Father, son &amp; Holy Spirit (Gen. 1:2) were together in the creation of the world.<br \/>\nThe Word came to the world that He created, came to His own, the Israelites, the people that had a covenant with God &amp; where waiting for the Messiah.<\/p>\n<p>In Him was life (He can give life) &amp; He is the<strong> true<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Light<\/span>. Those who<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> <strong>receive Him &amp; believe<\/strong> <strong>in His<\/strong> <\/span>name become <strong>children of God<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>The Word Becomes Flesh (Incarnation of God)<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>14 And <span style=\"color: #800000;\">the Word became<strong> flesh<\/strong><\/span> and <strong>dwelt among us<\/strong>, and we beheld <span style=\"color: #800000;\">His<\/span> glory, the glory as of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>only<\/strong> begotten of<\/span> <strong>the Father<\/strong>, full of grace and truth.<\/p>\n<p>15 John bore witness of <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Him<\/span> and cried out, saying, \u201cThis was <span style=\"color: #800000;\">He<\/span> of whom I said, \u2018<span style=\"color: #800000;\">He<\/span> who comes after me <span id=\"en-NKJV-26060\" class=\"text John-1-15\"><sup class=\"footnote\" data-fn=\"#fen-NKJV-26060f\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NKJV-26060f&quot; title=&quot;See footnote f&quot;&gt;f&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+1&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960#fen-NKJV-26060f\">f<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> is preferred before me, for <span style=\"color: #800000;\">He<\/span> was <strong>before me<\/strong>.\u2019\u201d 16 <span id=\"en-NKJV-26061\" class=\"text John-1-16\"><sup class=\"footnote\" data-fn=\"#fen-NKJV-26061g\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NKJV-26061g&quot; title=&quot;See footnote g&quot;&gt;g&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote g\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+1&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960#fen-NKJV-26061g\">g<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span> And of <span style=\"color: #800000;\">His<\/span> fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but <strong>grace and truth<\/strong> came through <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Jesus Christ.<\/span> 18 No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Son<\/span><\/strong>, who is in the bosom of the Father,<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> He<\/span> has declared Him. <span id=\"en-NKJV-26058\" class=\"text John-1-13\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+1&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960\">John 1:14-18.<\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Word who was<strong> God<\/strong>, became flesh and dwelt among us here on earth. <strong>John the Baptist<\/strong> gave witness of Him but even Him (Jesus) was younger\u00a0 in the flesh than John the Baptist, He (Jesus) existed before him vs.15.\u00a0 The Word\/God that apostle John is referring to is<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> Jesus Christ<\/span>, vs. 17 the<strong> only begotten<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>son<\/strong><\/span> of God the Father.<\/p>\n<p>We have already learned important facts about Jesus in these 18 verses above:<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Jesus<\/strong> can be referred as the <strong>Word<\/strong>, &amp; <strong>He is God<\/strong><br \/>\n2. <strong>Jesus<\/strong> is the only begotten <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Son<\/span> of God the Father.<br \/>\n3. <strong>Jesus<\/strong> existed \u201cin the beginning.\u201d<br \/>\n4. All things were made through <strong>Jesus.<\/strong> His attributes<strong> Life &amp; Light<\/strong><br \/>\n5. <strong>Jesus<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800000;\">is God made flesh<\/span>. (100% God, 100% man, God can&#8217;t stop being God).<br \/>\n6. Only those who<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> receive<\/span><strong> Jesus &amp; <\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">believe<\/span><strong> in Him <\/strong>become<strong> children of God.<\/strong><br \/>\n7. <strong>Jesus<\/strong> came to His own, the people that knew about Him, but they didn&#8217;t receive Him.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>2. The Beginning of Jesus&#8217; Ministry<\/strong> :<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">John the Baptist&#8217;s<\/span> Testimony about Jesus (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+1%3A19-34&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jn.1:19-34<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>19 Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, \u201cWho are you?\u201d 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, <strong>\u201cI am <\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">not<\/span><strong> the Christ.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>. . . <strong>23<\/strong> He said: \u201cI am\u2018The voice of one crying in the wilderness: \u201cMake straight the way of the Lord,\u201d \u2019as the<strong> prophet Isaiah<\/strong> said.\u201d 24 Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees. 25 And they asked him, saying, \u201cWhy then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>26 John answered them, saying, \u201cI baptize with water, but <strong>there stands<\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> One<\/span><strong> among you whom you do not know<\/strong>. 27 <span style=\"color: #800000;\">It is He<\/span> who, coming after me, is preferred before me, <strong>whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose<\/strong>.\u201d 28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+1%3A19-34&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jn.1:19-28<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In vs. 23\u00a0 John the Baptist was referring to <a href=\"https:\/\/classic.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah+40%3A1-3&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaiah 40:1-3<\/a> , he was <span class=\"text Isa-40-3\">preparing the way of the <span class=\"small-caps divine-name\">Lord. Baptism was a sign of<strong> repentance<\/strong>. People that are baptized are expressing that they are turning away from their sins.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>29 The next day John saw <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Jesus coming<\/span> toward him, and said, <span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201cBehold! <strong>The Lamb of God<\/strong> who takes away the sin of the world!<\/span> 30 This is He of whom I said, \u2018After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.\u2019 31 I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>32 And John bore witness, saying, \u201c<strong>I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him<\/strong>. 33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, \u2018Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is <span style=\"color: #800000;\">He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit<\/span>.\u2019 34 And I have seen and testified that this is the <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Son of God.<\/span>\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+1%3A19-34&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jn.1:29-34<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>John the Baptist reminds the Jews the Messianic promise made to Abraham, about the lamb <span class=\"quote\">\u201cwithout blemish\u201d <\/span>(Gen. 22:7-8, Exodus 12:5, Is.53:6-7) there was a lamb sacrificed temporarily every year for the sins of the nation, until <span class=\"quote\">\u201cGod will provide for Himself\u201d a lamb. Jesus is the Lamb of God.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">John the Baptist&#8217;s disciples follow Jesus.<\/span> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+1%3A35-42&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1:35-42<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"text John-1-35\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">35\u00a0<\/sup><strong>Again<\/strong>, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-26081\" class=\"text John-1-36\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">36\u00a0<\/sup>And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, <strong>\u201cBehold the Lamb of God!\u201d <\/strong><\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-26082\" class=\"text John-1-37\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">37\u00a0<\/sup>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">two disciples<\/span> heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Two disciples of John the Baptist followed Jesus, one of them was <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Andrew<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000080;\">&amp;<\/span> the other one was his brother <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Simon Peter<\/span>. &#8220;<em><span id=\"en-NKJV-26085\" class=\"text John-1-40\">One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was <strong>Andrew, Simon Peter<\/strong>\u2019s brother. <span id=\"en-MEV-26086\" class=\"text John-1-41\">He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, \u201cWe have found <span style=\"color: #800000;\">the Messiah<\/span>\u201d (which means the Christ). <\/span> <span id=\"en-MEV-26087\" class=\"text John-1-42\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">42\u00a0<\/sup>Then he <strong>brought him to Jesus<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/em>&#8221; vs.40-42.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Then next day<span style=\"color: #000080;\"> Jesus calls Philip &amp; Nathanael. <\/span>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+1%3A43-51&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jn.1:43-51<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"text John-1-45\"><span class=\"text John-1-43\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">43\u00a0<\/sup>The following day <strong>Jesus<\/strong> wanted to go to Galilee, and <strong>He found Philip<\/strong> and said to him, <span class=\"woj\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201cFollow Me.\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-26089\" class=\"text John-1-44\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">44\u00a0<\/sup>Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. <\/span> <sup class=\"versenum hide\">45<\/sup>Philip found Nathanael and said to him, \u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\">We have found Him <strong>of whom Moses<\/strong> in the law, <strong>and also the prophets, wrote<\/strong><\/span>\u2014Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. . . . <span class=\"text John-1-49\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">49\u00a0<\/sup>Nathanael answered and said to Him, \u201cRabbi, <strong>You are the <\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Son of God!<\/span><strong> You are the King of Israel!\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-26095\" class=\"text John-1-50\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">50\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus answered and said to him, <span class=\"woj\">\u201cBecause I said to you, \u2018I saw you under the fig tree,\u2019 do you believe? You will see greater things than these.\u201d<\/span> <\/span> <span id=\"en-NKJV-26096\" class=\"text John-1-51\"><sup class=\"versenum hide\">51\u00a0<\/sup>And He said to him, <span class=\"woj\">\u201cMost assuredly, I say to you,<\/span> <span class=\"woj\">hereafter<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"woj\">you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Son of Man.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-26090\" class=\"text John-1-45\"><span id=\"en-NKJV-26094\" class=\"text John-1-49\"><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Philip referred to Jesus as the fulfillment of the Scriptures of the Old Testament. After doubting a little when he heard Jesus was from Nazareth, but then Nathanael went to see &amp; recognized Jesus was the son of God, the Messiah.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus preferred title for Himself was the <strong>Son of Man<\/strong>, it refers to His human nature but also has prophetic significance, <a href=\"https:\/\/classic.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Dan.+7%3A13-14&amp;version=AKJV;MEV;NKJV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dan.7:13-14<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 1 of 17 in the series <a href=\"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?series=john\" class=\"series-95\" title=\"John\">John<\/a><\/div><p>Even all four gospels are complementary and all tell about the story of Jesus, the gospel of John is different from the gospel of Matthew, Mark &amp; Luke.
