{"id":7145,"date":"2020-09-01T07:00:26","date_gmt":"2020-09-01T11:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=7145"},"modified":"2025-12-03T09:49:35","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T14:49:35","slug":"mystic-teresa-of-avila","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=7145","title":{"rendered":"Mystic Teresa of Avila, Pt.1"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 5 of 9 in the series <a href=\"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?series=mysticism\" class=\"series-85\" title=\"Mysticism\">Mysticism<\/a><\/div><blockquote><p><span id=\"en-NKJV-15910\" class=\"text Ps-119-11\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Your word<\/span><\/strong> I have hidden in my heart, <\/span><span class=\"text Ps-119-11\"><strong>That I might <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not sin<\/span> against You<\/strong>.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm%20119%3A11&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1960\">Psalm 119:11<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When you check the doctrine of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/newsletters\/2019\/newsletter20190730.htm#article12\">Catholic<\/a> mystics you realize they didn&#8217;t understand the gospel according to the Bible (salvation by faith in Jesus\u00a0 sacrifice, not by works, <a href=\"https:\/\/classic.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=ephesians%202%3A8-9&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eph.2:8-9<\/a>). But they believed their works &amp; sacrifices were needed to &#8216;<em>ascend<\/em>&#8216; &amp; get closer to God. <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Jesus Christ was not their mediator<\/span>, <strong>but different &#8216;saints&#8217;<\/strong> that they called patrons or advocates. Most of their doctrines (&amp; even their visions) came from the <strong>traditions<\/strong> of the Catholic Church, not the Bible.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Catholics believe in the cleansing fires of <span style=\"color: #800000;\">purgatory<\/span> (from <a href=\"https:\/\/watch-unto-prayer.org\/apocrypha.html\"> Apocrypha<\/a> book of 2 Maccabees 12 &amp; misinterpretation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Cor.3%3A15%3B+1+Pet+1%3A7&amp;version=AKJV\">1 Cor.3:15 &amp; 1 Pet 1:7<\/a>) &amp; believe sin has a <strong>double consequence<\/strong> (CCC #<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scborromeo.org\/ccc\/para\/1472.htm\">1472<\/a>), which are non-Biblical concepts, but interpretations according to their traditions. In other words they believe Jesus&#8217; sacrifice was <strong>NOT sufficient to clean us from sin! <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The Catholic Church holds that &#8220;all who <strong>die in God&#8217;s grace<\/strong> and friendship <strong>but still<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> imperfectly <span style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\">purified<\/span><\/span>&#8221; undergo the process of purification which the Church calls<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> purgatory<\/span><\/strong>, &#8220;so as to achieve the <span style=\"color: #800000;\">holiness necessary<\/span> to enter the joy of heaven&#8221;. -Wikipedia.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sadly all these<strong> Catholic mystics were<\/strong> <strong>trying to get<span style=\"color: #000080;\"> purified<\/span><\/strong> (by punishing their sinful <strong>attachment<\/strong> to the world with prayer, meditation, suffering, physical punishment, etc.) while on earth, in order to be <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>holy<\/strong><\/span> &amp; enter heaven without passing through purgatory. They believed that pain and suffering played a crucial role in salvation. Most mystics had the following characteristics (for modern mystics disregard 3 &amp; 4):<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Their <strong>authority <\/strong>is not the Scriptures alone.<\/li>\n<li>They<strong> read books<\/strong> of other mystics to imitate them.<\/li>\n<li>Practice <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asceticism\">Ascetic<\/a> withdrawal from the world to<span class=\"text\"><span class=\"textsm\"> be <span style=\"color: #000080;\">purified<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Have an unhealthy desire of pain\/suffering to pay for their sins<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reject<\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> rational<\/span> thinking <\/strong>&amp; desire to<strong> quiet<\/strong> their minds -But we are to love God even with our minds, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matt.+22%3A37&amp;version=AKJV\">Matt. 22:37<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Pursue <strong>mystical union<\/strong> of the soul with God <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">through <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>silence<\/strong><\/span> &amp; techniques of <span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\">meditation<\/span><\/span>. -But Jesus nor the early church practiced or taught about it. Jesus told us how to pray <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke%2011&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1960\">Luke 11<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com\/blog\/?p=22685\">Teresa of Avila<\/a><\/strong> (28 March 1515 \u2013 4 October 1582) was a Catholic mystic born in Spain from a family with <strong>Jewish<\/strong> roots. Her real name was Teresa S\u00e1nchez de Cepeda y Ahumada (a.k.a. Teresa de Jesus). Her grandfather <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200120172838\/http:\/\/www.osservatoreromano.va:80\/en\/news\/teresas-marrano-grandfather\">Juan S\u00e1nchez de Toledo <\/a>(1440-1507- born in Toledo Spain) was a <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250909013822\/https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/converso\">converso<\/a>, who was condemned by the Spanish Inquisition for <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>returning<\/strong> to his Jewish faith<\/span>, he received reconciliation in 1485 which helped him to preserve his economic and social status, &amp; was condemned to wear in procession for six weeks the <em>sanbenito<\/em>, a yellow garment of those condemned by the Inquisition. In order to clean his lineage he purchased a certificate of <em>limpieza de sangre<\/em> [cleansed blood] and moved to Avila were was able to assume a Catholic identity.<\/p>\n<p>When Teresa&#8217;s mother die, she (a teenager) embraced a deeper devotion to the <strong>Virgin Mary<\/strong> as her spiritual mother. Teresa was influenced by reading books of mystics, among them <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Francisco_de_Osuna\">Francisco de Osuna<\/a>\u00a0&amp; his book <i>The Third Spiritual Alphabet<\/i> (he was a follower of Catholic mystic <a title=\"Francis of Assisi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Francis_of_Assisi\">Francis of Assisi<\/a>,\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #800000;\">first stigmatic<\/span> recorded, that did penances like long vigils, fasts, frequent flagellation, etc.) &amp; also by the mystical <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Ascetic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ascetic\">ascetic<\/a> works of <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Saint Peter of Alcantara\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Peter_of_Alcantara\">St Peter of Alcantara<\/a> another follower of Francis of Assisi, who was often seen in <span style=\"color: #800000;\">ecstasies and levitation<\/span>, &amp; who became <strong>her first counselor.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After starting her life in the monastery of the Incarnation in 1536, she got sick &amp; was paralyzed for almost 3 years, at this time, she claimed to have experience ecstasy and to have created a perfect <strong>union with God<\/strong>. But she believed this &amp; many other illnesses she had, were given by God, she had a lot of guilt of her past &amp; present sins. Her father took her home but after she was healed she went back to the Monastery. She claimed she was healed by <strong>&#8216;glorious St. Joseph&#8217;<\/strong> (husband of Mary) who she chose as her<strong> &#8216;patron &amp; lord&#8217;, <\/strong>he was her <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mediator &amp; advocate<\/span>&#8211; <em>Autobiography, Chap.6 p.51<\/em>. She reformed <strong>the Carmelita Order <\/strong> to make it more strict, limited the nuns to<a href=\"http:\/\/jesus-is-savior.com\/False%20Religions\/Wicca%20%26%20Witchcraft\/13.htm\"><strong> 13<\/strong><\/a> per house, maximum 21 if not enough alms, instituted the great\/grate veil, wearing of sandals &#8216;Discalced&#8217; &amp; founded other monasteries for men with the help <strong>of John of the Cross<\/strong> (also a\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250909013822\/https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/converso\">converso<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Pictures of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.phatmass.com\/phorum\/topic\/130023-greatgrate-veils-of-the-discalced-carmelite-nuns\/\"> Carmelites<\/a> nuns.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 216px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.pinimg.com\/564x\/c6\/7f\/2d\/c67f2d36eb68eca692d46fffa197f167.jpg\" width=\"206\" height=\"186\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carmelite nuns for hundreds of years lived <strong>secluded<\/strong> &amp; wore a veil when had a visitor.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 243px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.pinimg.com\/564x\/74\/4a\/39\/744a397dc88ffbd614e26a8790dabcc1.jpg\" width=\"233\" height=\"174\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carmelite nuns wearing the veil in public (before Council Vatican II).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Teresa of Avila stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFrom<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> long<\/span> experience <\/strong>I have learned that<strong> there is nothing like <span style=\"color: #800000;\">holy water<\/span> to put <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">devils<\/span> to flight<\/strong> and prevent them from coming back again. They also<strong> flee<\/strong> from the<strong> Cross, but return<\/strong>;<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> so <strong>holy water<\/strong> must have great <strong>virtue<\/strong><\/span>.\u201d &#8211; St. Teresa of Avila.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-RHBVatmavLo\/UNmDzD7zBrI\/AAAAAAAAK9s\/S9CPV47wJJc\/s1600\/teresa-of-jesus.jpg\" width=\"193\" height=\"326\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Teresa of Avila had many apparitions of <strong>infant Jesus<\/strong>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Teresa spent long periods of time in <strong>meditation<\/strong>, which she called the \u201cprayer of <strong>quiet<\/strong>\u201d &amp; the \u201c<em><strong>prayer of union<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d During these prayers she often fell into a trance. She was closely watched suspected of heresy &amp; was investigated for several years by her superiors who requested her to write about her experiences. <strong>The Jesuits<\/strong> started to visit her in 1555. In 1557 her confessor, <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Jesuit<\/span> General <strong>Francis of Borgia<\/strong> (also of <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200125224344\/http:\/\/burghesius.blogspot.com:80\/2011\/06\/borgia-family-and-ancient-jewish-roots.html\">Jewish roots<\/a>), <strong>approves of the spirit of the mystic.<\/strong> He reassured her of the<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong> divine origin<\/strong><\/span> and inspiration of her thoughts. No long after that visit, she gets her first <strong>involuntary levitation <\/strong>&amp; a vision of Hell.<\/p>\n<p>She had numerous visions of the souls in <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Purgatory<\/span>, apparitions of infant Jesus, later, of her deceased friend Peter of <a href=\"https:\/\/oneintheirhearts.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/10\/st-peter-of-alcantara-appears-to-st-teresa-of-avila1.jpg?w=640\">Alcantara<\/a>, etc. In 1559 she was having encounters with an angel (she said a <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>seraphim<\/strong><\/span>) that pierced her heart, causing her pain &amp; ecstasy. (Saint Francis of Assisi had also said he encountered a <span style=\"color: #000080;\">seraphim<\/span>, who gave him <span style=\"color: #800000;\">the stigmata<\/span> wounds, no cases of stigmata occurred before him). Isaiah <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=isaiah%206&amp;version=KJV\">6<\/a> is the only place in the Bible that specifically mentions the name seraphim. But they have six wings, also mentioned in <a href=\"https:\/\/classic.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Rev.4%3A8&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rev.4:8, <\/a>about the living creatures.<\/p>\n<p>Teresa of Avila wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt pleased our Lord that I should see the following <strong>vision a number of times. I saw an angel<\/strong> near me, on the <strong>left<\/strong> side,<strong> in <span style=\"color: #800000;\">bodily<\/span> form<\/strong>. This I am not wont to see, save very rarely\u2026. In this vision it pleased the Lord that I should see it thus. <strong>He was not tall, but short<\/strong>, marvelously beautiful, with a face which shone as though he were <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">one of the highest<\/span> of the angels<\/strong>, who seem to be <strong>all of fire<\/strong>: they must be those whom we call <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Seraphim<\/span>\u2026. I saw in his hands a long<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> golden spear<\/span>, and at the point of the iron there seemed to be a <strong>little <span style=\"color: #800000;\">fire<\/span><\/strong>. This I thought that he thrust several times into my heart, and that it penetrated to my entrails. When he drew out the spear he seemed to be drawing them with it, <strong>leaving me all on <span style=\"color: #800000;\">fire<\/span><\/strong> with a <span style=\"color: #800000;\">wondrous <strong>love for God<\/strong><\/span><strong>. The <\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">pain<\/span><strong> was so great<\/strong> that it caused me to utter several moans; and yet so exceeding sweet is this <strong>greatest of pains<\/strong> that it is impossible to desire to be rid of it, or for the soul to be content with less than God.\u201d &#8211;<em>The Life of St. Teresa of Jesus, autobiography.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/proxy.duckduckgo.com\/iu\/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fi.pinimg.com%2Foriginals%2Fc9%2F81%2F94%2Fc98194da6f1bfab32a8d985d0b8f77f9.jpg&amp;f=1\" width=\"201\" height=\"297\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Talmud &amp; Kabbalah, the Seraphim are considered the <strong>higher<\/strong> angels, but the Bible doesn&#8217;t say that. The <span style=\"color: #000080;\">seraphim<\/span> has a<strong> mystic<\/strong> role according with Catholic &amp; <strong>Kabbalist<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giovanni_Pico_della_Mirandola\">Giovanni Pico della Mirandola<\/a>&#8216;s discourse &#8216;<em>Oration on the Dignity of Man&#8217; (1487):<\/em> &#8221; . . .<em>he spoke of three divisions in particular: the <span style=\"color: #000080;\">Seraphim<\/span>, Cherubim, and Thrones. These are the <strong>highest<\/strong> three choirs in the angel hierarchy, each one embodying a <span style=\"color: #800000;\">different virtue<\/span>. The Seraphim represent <strong>charity <\/strong><\/em>(<strong>love<\/strong>)<em>, and in order to obtain the status of Seraphim, Mirandola declares that one must<\/em> <em>&#8220;<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>burn with love<\/strong> for the Creator<\/span><\/em>&#8220;. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oration_on_the_Dignity_of_Man\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also her experience of <strong>mystical union<\/strong> with God is found in <strong>Gnosticism<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Teresa described the soul&#8217;s intense desire for God in the language of erotic passion. In this, she belongs to a long tradition of mystical experience that is known as <span style=\"color: #800000;\">bridal mysticism<\/span> . . .<\/p>\n<p>The symbolism of <strong>bridal mysticism is found already in early <span style=\"color: #800000;\">gnostic<\/span> forms of Christianity<\/strong>, where the <strong>central sacrament<\/strong> is called the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Bridal Chamber<\/strong><\/span>. There the <span style=\"color: #800000;\">feminine soul of the gnostic unites with the masculine spirit<\/span> and is in this way spiritualized, that is, liberated from the limitations of mundane existence.<\/p>\n<p>Related symbolism is found as well in the writings of the early Christian<strong> mystic<\/strong> <strong>Origen<\/strong> and the Neoplatonic <strong>mystic Plotinus<\/strong>. These three forms of mysticism are related and serve as the foundation for the history of mysticism in Christianity. &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250116060931\/https:\/\/aras.org\/selection_ecstasy.aspx\">ARAS<\/a> (Archive for Research in Archetypal Symbolism)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Correcting the last statement, is the foundation for the history of mysticism in <strong>Catholicism<\/strong>, we don&#8217;t see bridal mysticism in the New Testament nor in primitive church writings who fought Gnosticism infiltration. The Bridal Chamber is described in the <strong>gnostic<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gotquestions.org\/gospel-of-Philip.html\"><em><span class=\"book_title\">Gospel of Philip<\/span><\/em><\/a> as the means to attain <strong>Christhood<\/strong>, &amp; also found in gnostic gospel of Thomas. The <strong>Bridal Chamber<\/strong> is taught with Catholic adoration of the <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Eucharist<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gnostic<\/strong> <strong>Jews<\/strong> tried to infiltrate the early church, and were considered heretics by the apostles &amp; were exposed. Gnostics (as Kabbalists) believe in calling <strong>angels<\/strong> so they can take prayers to God on behalf of humankind &#8211; a practice similar to Catholics praying for the intercession of saints. The Gnostics valued what they <strong>experienced<\/strong> and what they <strong>learned from \u2018angels&#8217;<\/strong> over Holy Scripture, this is the main reason apostle Paul warned about angels in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Colossians+2%3A18-19%2C+galatians+1%3A8&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV\">Col. 2:18 &amp; Gal.1:8<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Cor.%2011%3A14&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1960\">2 Cor. 11:14<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicolaism\">Nicolaitans<\/a> were also a <strong>Gnostic<\/strong> sect. &#8220;<span id=\"en-NKJV-30724\" class=\"text Rev-2-6\"><span class=\"woj\"><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-30733\" class=\"text Rev-2-15\">Thus you also have those who hold the <span style=\"color: #800000;\">doctrine<\/span> of the Nicolaitans, <span style=\"color: #800000;\">which thing I hate<\/span><\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/span>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Revelation%202%3A6%2CRevelation%202%3A14-15&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;RVR1960\">Rev.2:6, 14-15<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Promoters of <strong>Bridal mysticism<\/strong> always quote from <a href=\"https:\/\/spirituallysmart.com\/song.html\">Song of Songs<\/a>. Which is also found in the opening of the Zohar ( -Main book of Kabbalah):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>\u201c<\/b>Rabbi Hezekiah opened, \u2018<em>Like a rose among thorns, so is my darling among the maidens<\/em>\u2019 (Song of Songs 2:2). Who is<strong> Rosa Mystica? Our Lady of Israel<\/strong> (Kneset Yisrael\/ Matronita\/ Sabbath Queen). For there is a Rose and then there is <strong>Rosa Mystica<\/strong>. Just as <strong>a rose<\/strong> among the thorns is coloured red and white, so<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> Our Lady of Israel<\/span> includes judgement and mercy. Just as a Rose has <strong>13<\/strong> petals, so <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Our Lady<\/span> of Israel has <strong>13<\/strong> attributes of mercy surrounding her on every side<b>&#8220;.<\/b>\u00a0 Zohar 1:1.<\/p>\n<p>See <a href=\"http:\/\/parablesblog.blogspot.com\/2015\/03\/attractive-deception-part-9.html\">Queen of Sabbath<\/a>. The Catholic tradition of the Virgin <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rosa_Mystica\">Rosa Mystica,<\/a> also uses the <strong>13<\/strong>th.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In her book the The <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Interior_Castle\">Inner Castle<\/a>, <\/em>chap. 1 Teresa wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">. . .to consider our soul like a <strong>castle<\/strong> <strong>of<\/strong> <strong>a <\/strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">diamond<\/span> or <strong>clear<\/strong> <strong>crystal<\/strong>, where there are <strong>many<\/strong> <strong>dwellings<\/strong>, just as in heaven there are many mansions.
