{"id":6920,"date":"2019-07-07T09:00:10","date_gmt":"2019-07-07T13:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=6920"},"modified":"2024-07-24T13:23:18","modified_gmt":"2024-07-24T17:23:18","slug":"rhema-vs-logos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=6920","title":{"rendered":"Rhema vs. Logos"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 5 of 9 in the series <a href=\"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?series=unsound-doctrines\" class=\"series-80\" title=\"Unsound Doctrines\">Unsound Doctrines<\/a><\/div>\r\n<p>A long time ago at my church, I was taught that there was a difference between the Greek words <strong>Logos and Rhema<\/strong>, both translate &#8216;<strong>word<\/strong>&#8216;. I don&#8217;t know if that was a regular Christian teaching out pastor had or if it had to do because at the time he was being influenced by the &#8216;New Apostolic Reformation (NAR)&#8217; teachers. But we were taught that:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Rhema<\/span><\/strong> meant a \u201c<strong>fresh<\/strong> <strong>spoken\/living&#8221;<\/strong> word, &amp; <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Logos<\/span><\/strong> meant \u201c<strong>written<\/strong>\u201d word.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\r\n<p>Many years later to my surprise, I found while studying the Word of God, that in the Greek New Testament the word rhema (G4487)\u00a0 &amp; the word logos (G3056) , are used interchangeably, synonymously and <strong>there is <span style=\"color: #800000;\">no difference<\/span> between logos and rhema at all<\/strong>, BOTH of them mean SPOKEN word! Also found that most <a href=\"https:\/\/annointing.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/01\/rhema-vs-logos-a-scholars-perspective.pdf\">Greek scholars,<\/a> state that the apostles or New Testament writers (under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit) <strong>made NO such distinction<\/strong> between these two terms in their writings.<\/p>\r\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-23214\" class=\"text Matt-4-4\"><span class=\"woj\">Rhema,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingjamesbibledictionary.com\/StrongsNo\/G4487\/followers\"> G4487<\/a>= Noun Neuter- A word, an utterance (individually, collectively or specially), that which <strong>is or has been uttered<\/strong> by the <strong>living<\/strong> <strong>voice<\/strong>, thing <span style=\"color: #800000;\">spoken<\/span>. (Found in the New Testament a total of\u00a0 70 times). From verb G4483 &#8211; to pour forth, to utter.<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>Logos, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingjamesbibledictionary.com\/StrongsNo\/G3056\/followers\">G3056<\/a> = Noun Masculine &#8211; A word, divine utterance, uttered by a <strong>living<\/strong> <strong>voice, <\/strong>the <span style=\"color: #800000;\">act of <strong>speaking<\/strong><\/span>. (Found <strong>330<\/strong> times, almost 5 times more than rhema). Logos is from the root of the Greek <strong>verb<\/strong> &#8220;<span style=\"color: #800000;\">to speak<\/span>&#8221; G3004.<\/p>\r\n<p>All these teachers that came out from the &#8216;<strong>Latter Rain Movement<\/strong>&#8216; founded by William Brahamn (e.g. Kenneth Hagin Sr. who founded \u201c<strong>Rhema<\/strong> Bible Training Center\u201d) use the above distinction between <strong>rhema<\/strong>=<span style=\"color: #800000;\">spoken<\/span> &amp; <strong>logos<\/strong>=<span style=\"color: #800000;\">written<\/span>. <strong>But why?<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8211; This done in order to teach that we need to <strong>seek<\/strong> for the <strong>rhema word or spoken words they give<\/strong>! That according to them this &#8216;rhema&#8217; is the &#8216;<strong>Holy<\/strong> <strong>Spirit\u2019s voice&#8217;<\/strong> in relation to <strong>the present<\/strong> moment we are living in &amp; the only one that will give us &#8216;Spiritual<strong> Life<\/strong>&#8216;, &#8216;<span style=\"color: #800000;\">NEW<\/span> <strong>Revelation&#8217;, <\/strong><strong>&#8216;Encounters <\/strong>with God<strong>&#8216;,<\/strong> etc. (&amp; we can also personally seek God for that rhema on prophetic words, words of wisdom, words of knowledge, etc.) . They teach we need &#8216;<span style=\"color: #800000;\">rhema<\/span>&#8216; words in order to have life &amp; to <strong>&#8216;walk in the Spirit&#8217;.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>There is<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong> nothing<\/strong> can give you Life <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">but the spoken<\/span> Word<\/span> of God. <strong>It\u2019s the only<\/strong> where that Life can come, is through His <span style=\"color: #800000;\">spoken<\/span> Word. &#8211; <strong>William Branham<\/strong>, Dec 29, 1963. &#8216;There Is A Man Here That Can Turn On The Light&#8217;.\u00a0 &#8211; See more in &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/william_branham_the_word_of_god\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Branham: The Word of God<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>But this is completely false! T<span id=\"en-AKJV-28643\" class=\"text 1Cor-12-8\">he Word of God says: <\/span>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><span id=\"en-AKJV-28643\" class=\"text 1Cor-12-8\"><em>&#8220;<\/em>For to one is <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>given<\/strong> by the <strong>Spirit<\/strong> <\/span>the <strong>word<\/strong> (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\">logos<\/span><\/span>) of wisdom; to another the <strong>word<\/strong> (<span style=\"color: #800000;\">logos<\/span>) of knowledge by the same Spirit<\/span>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Cor.12%3A8&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVA\">1 Cor.12:8<\/a> . See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingjamesbibledictionary.com\/BibleVerse\/1Corinthians\/12\/8\">Greek interlinear<\/a><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>A very popular &amp; leading apostle in the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) movement, <strong>Bill Johnson<\/strong> wrote:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;<em>As wonderful as <strong>our <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">spiritual roots<\/span><\/strong> are,<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> they are <strong>insufficient<\/strong><\/span>. <strong>What was good for yesterday <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">is <span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\">deficient<\/span> for today<\/span><\/strong>. To insist that <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">we stay<\/span> with<\/strong> what our fathers fought for <strong>is to insult<\/strong> our forefathers. <span style=\"color: #800000;\">They risked all<\/span> <strong>to pursue something<\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #800000;\"> fresh and <strong>new<\/strong> in God<\/span>. It\u2019s not that everything must change for us <strong>to flow with what God is saying and doing.<\/strong> It\u2019s just that we make too many<strong> assumptions<\/strong> about the rightness of what presently exists. Those assumptions <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>blind us<\/strong> to the <strong>revelations<\/strong><\/span> still contained in Scripture. In reality, what we think of as the normal Christian life cannot hold the weight of what God is about to do<\/em>.\u201d &#8211; (&#8216;<em>When Heaven Invades Earth<\/em>&#8216;, Bill Johnson, Kindle edition, pages 162-163), -emphasis mine<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>But we are <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">rooted<\/span> in Jesus Christ<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Colossians+2%3A7&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVA\">Col. 2:7<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romanos+11%3A16%2C+18&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1977\">Rom 11:16<\/a>) &amp; His Word (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Col.+3%3A16&amp;version=AKJV\">Col.3:16<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+8%3A11-18&amp;version=AKJV\">Lk.8:11-18<\/a>, Lk 11: 28)! In the Scriptures we have everything we need &amp; according to God <strong>it is sufficient!<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20Timothy%203%3A16-17&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1960\">2 Tim. 3:16-17.<\/a><\/strong> The <span style=\"color: #800000;\">fresh &amp; new<\/span> for the early disciples was because the arrival of the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>promised Messiah,<\/strong><\/span><strong> &amp; their beginning into the New Covenant!<\/strong> Do we want to get out of it &amp; risk it all to pursue something different &amp; new? The Word of God tell us over &amp; over again, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #800000;\">to remain<\/span>, to continue or hold fast to the<strong> sound doctrine<\/strong> that Jesus &amp; His disciples taught.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>&#8220;<span id=\"en-AKJV-29823\" class=\"text 2Tim-1-13\"><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Hold fast<\/strong><\/span> the form of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sound words<\/span><strong>, <\/strong>which thou hast<strong> heard of me,<\/strong> in faith and love<strong> which is in Christ Jesus&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span> 2 Tim. 1:13, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240410070250\/https:\/\/www.kingjamesbibleonline.org\/Acts-2-42\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Acts 2:42<\/a>, <span id=\"en-AKJV-29764\" class=\"text 1Tim-4-16\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240406061428\/https:\/\/www.kingjamesbibleonline.org\/1-Timothy-4-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 Tim. 4:16<\/a><\/span>, etc.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\r\n<p>Their agenda is to take us<strong> away from the true teachings<\/strong> (doctrine) of the Word of God, into their Gnostic &amp; mystical experiences, that have no boundaries &amp; that lead into the<strong> occult<\/strong><em>.\u00a0 <\/em>To sustain their teaching, they will give examples were the word &#8216;rhema&#8217; is used in the Bible, but they wont give you many where logos is used, example, the main verse they use is Matt.4:4 when Jesus said:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-23214\" class=\"text Matt-4-4\"><span class=\"woj\">\u201cIt is<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> written<\/span><strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/studybible.info\/strongs\/1125\">G1125<\/a>=grapho), <\/strong>\u2018Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every <strong>word<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingjamesbibledictionary.com\/StrongsNo\/G4487\/followers\">G4487 <\/a>=<span style=\"color: #800000;\">rhema<\/span>) that proceeds from<strong> the mouth of God<\/strong><\/span><\/span><strong>&#8221; <\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingjamesbibledictionary.com\/BibleVerse\/Matthew\/4\/4\">Matt. 4:4<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>Please notice Jesus <strong>didn&#8217;t<\/strong> use the word <strong>&#8216;<\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">logos<\/span><strong>&#8216;<\/strong> to describe the <strong>written<\/strong> Word. But also all the <span style=\"color: #800000;\">spoken<\/span> words of Jesus (or that came <strong>from the mouth of God<\/strong>) we have them recorded, they are <strong>written <\/strong>today. When Jesus said that He was referring to the written Word of God &amp; to His teachings.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>These NAR teachings are very subtle &amp; they always <strong>mix truth with lies<\/strong>, otherwise Christians wouldn&#8217;t be interested &amp; wouldn&#8217;t fall for their lies, they are <strong>unbiblical!<\/strong> They <span class=\"google-src-text\">believe their &#8216;<em>rhema&#8217;<\/em> words (that they proclaims are from God) are equal in <strong>authority<\/strong> to the Scriptures, but this is a BIG error! This is what all sects do!<br \/><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>I believe God can guide us &amp; can speak to our hearts. The Scriptures talk about <strong>being led by the Spirit of God<\/strong>. But this is mainly on a personal level, still we can err &amp; <strong>it doesn&#8217;t have same authority<\/strong> as the inerrant Scripture, <span style=\"color: #800000;\">we cannot add or subtract to the Word of God!<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Deut.+4%3A2%3B+Prov.+30%3A6%2C+Gal.+1%3A8-9+%3B+Rev.22%3A19%3B+Acts+17%3A11&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1960\">Deut. 4:2; Prov. 30:6, Gal. 1:8-9 ; Rev.22:19; Acts 17:11.<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>If we study these words <strong>logos vs rhema<\/strong> in the Bible, we will notice there is <strong>not<\/strong> any distinction as they teach. Below are some important examples:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><span id=\"en-NKJV-24130\" class=\"text Matt-26-75\"><em>&#8220;And Peter remembered <strong>the word<\/strong><\/em> (<span style=\"color: #800000;\">rhema<\/span>)<em><strong> of Jesus<\/strong> who had said to him, <span class=\"woj\">\u201cBefore the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingjamesbibledictionary.com\/BibleVerse\/Matthew\/26\/75\">Matthew 26:75<\/a> .<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span id=\"en-NKJV-24130\" class=\"text Matt-26-75\">\u00a0Compare with <\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-25926\" class=\"text Luke-22-61\"><span class=\"woj\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingjamesbibledictionary.com\/BibleVerse\/Luke\/22\/61\">Luke 22:61<\/a><\/span><\/span> : <span id=\"en-NKJV-25926\" class=\"text Luke-22-61\">&#8220;<em>Then Peter remembered the <strong>word<\/strong><\/em> (<span style=\"color: #800000;\">logos)<\/span> <em><strong>of the Lord<\/strong>, how He had said to him, <span class=\"woj\">\u201cBefore the rooster <\/span><\/em><span class=\"woj\"><em>crows, you will deny Me three times<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Logos, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingjamesbibledictionary.com\/StrongsNo\/G3056\/followers\">G3056<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><em>&#8220;<span class=\"text John-1-1\">In the beginning was the <strong>Word <\/strong><\/span><\/em><span class=\"text John-1-1\">(logos)<\/span><em><span class=\"text John-1-1\">, and the <strong>Word <\/strong><\/span><\/em><span class=\"text John-1-1\">(logos)<\/span><em><span class=\"text John-1-1\"> was with God, and the <strong>Word <\/strong><\/span><\/em><span class=\"text John-1-1\">(logos)<\/span><em><span class=\"text John-1-1\"> was God.<\/span>&#8221; <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Jn.+1%3A1&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVA\">Jn.1:1<\/a><em><br \/><\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><em>&#8220;A<span class=\"text John-4-39\">nd many of the Samaritans of that city <strong>believed in Him because<\/strong> of the <strong>word<\/strong><\/span><\/em><span class=\"text John-4-39\"> (logos)<\/span><em><span class=\"text John-4-39\"> of the woman who <span style=\"color: #800000;\">testified<\/span><\/span> . . .<span id=\"en-NKJV-26198\" class=\"text John-4-41\">And many more believed because of <strong>His own<\/strong><\/span><\/em><span id=\"en-NKJV-26198\" class=\"text John-4-41\"> <\/span><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-26198\" class=\"text John-4-41\"><strong>word <\/strong><\/span><\/em><span id=\"en-NKJV-26198\" class=\"text John-4-41\">(<span style=\"color: #800000;\">logos<\/span>)<\/span><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-26198\" class=\"text John-4-41\">&#8220;<\/span><\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+4%3A39-41&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVA\">Jn.4:41<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<span id=\"en-NKJV-26198\" class=\"text John-4-41\">(words that were <\/span><span id=\"en-NKJV-26198\" class=\"text John-4-41\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">spoken <\/span>not written)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"text John-5-24\"><span class=\"woj\">\u201c<em>Most assuredly, I say to you, <\/em><\/span><em><span class=\"woj\">he who <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">hears<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">My <\/span>word <\/strong><\/span><\/em><span class=\"woj\">(<span style=\"color: #800000;\">logos<\/span>)<\/span><em><span class=\"woj\"> and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, <\/span><\/em><span class=\"woj\"><em>but has passed from death into life&#8221;<\/em>. <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Jn.5%3A24&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVA\">Jn.5:24<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"text John-7-40\"><em>&#8220;Therefore many from the crowd, when <span style=\"color: #800000;\">they <strong>heard<\/strong><\/span> this <strong>saying<\/strong><\/em> (<span style=\"color: #800000;\">logos<\/span>),<em> said, \u201cTruly this is the Prophet&#8221;. <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Jn.7%3A40&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVA\">Jn.7:40<\/a><em><br \/><\/em><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"text John-8-31\"><em>&#8220;Then <strong>Jesus said<\/strong> to those Jews who believed Him, <span class=\"woj\">\u201c<strong>If<\/strong> you<\/span> <\/em><span class=\"woj\"><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">abide<\/span> in <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">My<\/span> word<\/strong><\/em> (<span style=\"color: #800000;\">logos<\/span>), <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\">you are My disciples <\/span>indeed<\/span>&#8220;<\/em>.<\/span><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Jn.+8%3A30-31&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVA\">Jn. 8:31<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p><span id=\"en-NKJV-26433\" class=\"text John-8-51\"><em><span class=\"woj\">&#8220;Most assuredly, I say to you,<\/span> <\/em><span class=\"woj\"><em>if anyone <span style=\"color: #800000;\">keeps<\/span> <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">My<\/span> word <\/strong><\/em>(<span style=\"color: #800000;\">logos<\/span>)<em> he shall <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">never see death<\/span><\/em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Jn.8%3A51&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVA\">Jn.8:51<\/a>\u00a0 &#8211; This is eternal life.<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;<em><span id=\"en-NKJV-26703\" class=\"text John-15-3\"><span class=\"woj\">You are already clean because of <strong>the word <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/em><span id=\"en-NKJV-26703\" class=\"text John-15-3\"><span class=\"woj\">(<span style=\"color: #800000;\">logos<\/span>)<\/span><\/span><em><span id=\"en-NKJV-26703\" class=\"text John-15-3\"><span class=\"woj\"> which <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">I<\/span> have <span style=\"color: #800000;\">spoken<\/span><\/strong> to you<\/span><\/span>&#8220;<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Jn.15%3A3&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVA\">Jn.15:3<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;<em><span id=\"en-AKJV-23272\" class=\"text Matt-5-37\">But let your <strong>communication <\/strong><\/span><\/em><span id=\"en-AKJV-23272\" class=\"text Matt-5-37\">(logos)<\/span><em><span id=\"en-AKJV-23272\" class=\"text Matt-5-37\"> be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil<\/span><\/em>&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%205%3A37&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1960\">Mtt.5:37<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"text Matt-7-24\"><span class=\"woj\">\u201c<em>Therefore<\/em><\/span> <span class=\"woj\"><em>whoever <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">hears<\/span><\/strong> these <strong>sayings <\/strong><\/em>(logos)<em> of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock<\/em>:<\/span><\/span>&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+7%3A24&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVA\">Matt. 7:24<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;<em>The centurion answered and said, \u201cLord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><b>speak<\/b><\/span> a <b>word <\/b><\/em><b>(logos)<\/b><em>, and my servant will be healed<\/em>.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%208%3A8&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVR1960\">Matt.8:8<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;<span class=\"text Matt-8-16\"><em>When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed.
