God made promises to Abraham (Gen.12:1-3, <\/a>&17:7<\/a>) & his’ Descendant<\/strong>\/The Seed<\/strong>‘. Christ, the Messiah was coming from Abraham’s lineage, but some Jews stumbled on this (Isaiah 28:16<\/a><\/span>, Rom. 9:33<\/a>), they misinterpreted it & took it the blessings were just for all Abraham’s descendants in the flesh, Israelites<\/strong>. Sadly many Jews still believe that today! <\/span><\/p>\n

In the Old Testament the Hebrew word H2233<\/a>\u00a0Zera, = “seed<\/b><\/span>” is a singular<\/span> noun that can also mean offspring <\/strong>(collective). <\/span>Many modern bibles translate or change the Hebrew word “seed<\/b><\/span>” as “descendants<\/span><\/b>,” “children,”\u00a0 (plural only), see Gen.17<\/a>. The Hebrew text could have used a plural form, like the word ‘Generations’ (plural) in Hebrew is H1755<\/a>= dore, or H6631<\/a>=descendants, offspring, or the word ‘mishpachan’ H4940<\/a>, etc, if wanted to make clear it was plural. This miss translation makes it difficult to understand, altering the scriptures & the doctrine.\u00a0 In Greek language there are distinct words for seed (spermati<\/em>) & seeds<\/strong> (spermasin<\/em>).

To know if ‘seed’ in Hebrew has singular or collective meaning we need to read in context. Also we find in Gen 21:12, “for in Isaac shall thy seed<\/span> be called<\/strong>.<\/span>” (Physical offspring are not “called” out).
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

We can also notice through out the Old Testament that the seed<\/span> is a He<\/strong> (singular) & not them.<\/p>\n

In Gen.3:15<\/a> & 4:25<\/a> said “and I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed<\/span>; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his<\/span><\/span> <\/strong>heel.<\/em>” & 4: “25\u00a0<\/sup>And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed<\/span> instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.<\/em><\/span>” These passages are using the word seed<\/strong> as singular, for one person alone.<\/p>\n

Same in 2 Samuel 7:12 God’s word to King David “And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed<\/span> after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his<\/span><\/strong> kingdom. <\/span><\/em>13\u00a0<\/sup>He<\/span><\/span><\/strong> shall build an house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his<\/span><\/strong> kingdom for ever<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span>”<\/p>\n

Even the enemies of Jesus knew correctly: “42\u00a0<\/sup>Has the Scripture not said that the Christ<\/strong> comes from the seed<\/strong> of David<\/span>, out of the town of Bethlehem where David was?<\/em>\u201d <\/span>Jn.7:42<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Though they were waiting for the Christ, sadly many rejected Him.<\/p>\n

The Samaritans (which only accepted the first 5 books) also knew: “ The woman said, \u201cI know that Messiah\u201d (called Christ) \u201cis coming. When he<\/span><\/strong> comes, he<\/span><\/strong> will explain everything to us<\/em>.\u201d Jn.4:25<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Jesus Himself teach us how this seed goes from a singular to a plural seed:<\/p>\n

But Jesus answered them, saying, \u201cThe hour has come that the Son of Man<\/span> should be glorified. 24 Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies<\/span>, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain<\/strong> (John 12:23-24)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The apostle Paul, was a Jew & also a pharisee who knew well the Law Phil.3:5-8<\/strong><\/span><\/a> (who from early age<\/span> studied the Old Testament under the great Pharisaic teacher, Gamaliel)<\/span>, & who persecuted the church but later had an encounter with Jesus (Acts 9:4). He explains about the ‘Seed’ of Abraham<\/strong> (Gal.3:16<\/a>) & also does the apostle Peter, another Jew Acts 3:24-26<\/a>.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The SEED of Abraham can have 3 meanings, but most importantly, according with the Scriptures<\/span> only 2<\/span><\/strong> of these have to do with the ‘Promise<\/strong><\/span>‘ made to Abraham<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

1\/<\/span> Jesus Christ<\/span><\/strong> is the Promised ‘Seed of Abraham<\/strong>‘ who gives eternal life, the blessings & the promise of the Holy Spirit!<\/strong> to those who believe in Him! “. . that the blessing<\/strong> of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ<\/span>; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit<\/strong> through faith<\/span>“<\/em>.<\/span><\/span> Gal 6: 14.\u00a0 – <\/span>All<\/span> the nations <\/strong>would be blessed in Him<\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“And the angel of the Lord<\/span> called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, <\/span> 16\u00a0<\/sup>and said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord<\/span><\/strong>, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only <\/strong><\/span>son<\/span><\/strong>: <\/span> 17\u00a0<\/sup>that in blessing I will bless thee<\/strong>, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed<\/span><\/strong> as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed<\/span><\/strong> shall possess the gate of his enemies<\/span>; <\/span> <\/em>18\u00a0<\/sup>and IN<\/span> thy seed<\/span><\/strong> shall all the nations of the earth be blessed<\/strong>; because thou hast obeyed<\/strong> my voice<\/span><\/em>. Gen.22:15-18\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and<\/strong> his Seed<\/strong><\/span>. He does not<\/strong> say, \u201cand to seeds<\/strong>,\u201d meaning many, but \u201cand to your Seed,\u201d meaning one<\/span>, who is Christ<\/span>.<\/strong>. . .\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> 18\u00a0<\/sup>For if<\/strong> the inheritance<\/strong> comes from the law<\/span>, it no longer comes from the promise<\/span>.<\/strong> But God gave it to Abraham through a promise.<\/span><\/p>\n

19\u00a0<\/sup>What purpose then does the <\/strong>law<\/span> serve?<\/strong> It was added because of transgressions, until the Seed<\/strong><\/span> should come<\/span> to whom the promise was mad<\/span>e<\/span><\/strong>. . .<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Galatians 3:16-19<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

2\/<\/strong><\/span> “ <\/span>Therefore know that those who are of faith <\/strong><\/span>are the sons <\/span><\/em>(G5207<\/a> =son, descendent -birth or adoption) of Abraham<\/em><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>”\u00a0 (Gal 3: 6-7<\/a>).\u00a0 T<\/span>he law<\/strong> <\/span>is not of faith<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (Gal.3:12<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The seed of Abraham means also the believers<\/strong> justified by FAITH<\/strong><\/span> in the promised Seed, Jesus the Messiah. From that promise made to Abraham, hundreds of years later came about 2 covenants<\/strong>, the old one (provisional) & the new one. But the promise & initial plan never changed:<\/p>\n

a\/<\/strong> Old Covenant believers in Messiah<\/span>\/The Seed, since the beginning, Jews<\/span> & gentiles (Tamar, Rahab, Ruth were gentiles), & through out the<\/strong> Old Covenant (<\/strong>\u201cThe Lord<\/span> made NOT <\/strong>this covenant with our fathers,<\/strong> but with us<\/span>, <\/strong>even us, who are all of us here alive this day<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/em>\u201d Deut.5:1-3<\/a>). All the believers in the Old Covenant that were justified by faith<\/strong> before Messiah’s<\/span> coming Hebrew 11.<\/a><\/p>\n

“These all<\/strong> died in faith<\/span>, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off<\/span>, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/span>” vs.13. “And these all<\/strong>, having obtained a good report through<\/span> faith<\/span><\/strong>, received not<\/span> the promise<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/em>” vs. 39. And they had remission of their sins by the blood of innocent animals (Hebrew 9<\/a>). But this was a provisional, imperfect covenant, until Jesus the perfect sacrifice (the Seed) should come.<\/span><\/p>\n

b\/<\/strong> New Covenant<\/strong><\/span> believers<\/span> (Jews & gentiles),<\/strong> the ones\u00a0 born again<\/a> of the Spirit of God <\/strong>by faith in Jesus Christ, that through Jesus inherit the promises & blessings, because we all<\/strong> are one in Him<\/strong>.\u00a0 Once believers are united to Christ by faith they form one body<\/strong><\/span> with Him<\/span> & He is the head of that body. We are not Jew not gentiles anymore, but a new creature<\/strong>. The body of Christ, the Church.<\/p>\n

The Old Testament faith looked forward to a future event<\/strong>, (the Seed, the Messiah<\/strong>) the Lamb of God, which God progressively revealed more and more, until Jesus finally came. Our faith today looks back on a past event from\u00a02,000 years ago<\/strong>. – God’s provision on our behalf, which the world now knows to be the same Messiah,<\/span> Jesus’ death on the cross<\/strong>. Old Testament believers were not permanently indwelled by the Holy Spirit as believers today, this began on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2 ). God instituted the church on that day, & those who believed in Jesus became spiritually born again. Salvation has always been a matter of receiving God’s provision in belief (by faith<\/span>).<\/strong><\/p>\n

6 Even as Abraham believed<\/span><\/strong> God<\/strong>, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. <\/span><\/span> 7\u00a0<\/sup>Know ye therefore that they which <\/strong>are of faith<\/strong><\/span>,<\/span> the same are the children of Abraham<\/strong>. <\/span> 8\u00a0<\/sup>And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith<\/span>, preached before the gospel unto Abraham<\/strong>, saying<\/i>, In thee shall all nations<\/strong> be blessed. <\/span> 9\u00a0<\/sup>So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. <\/span> 10\u00a0<\/sup>For as many as are of the works of the <\/strong>law<\/span> are<\/strong> under the curse:. . .12\u00a0<\/sup>And the law<\/span><\/strong> is not of faith<\/strong><\/span>: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. <\/span> 13\u00a0<\/sup>Christ<\/span> <\/strong>hath redeemed us from the curse of the <\/strong>law<\/span>, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is<\/i> every one that hangeth on a tree: <\/span> 14\u00a0<\/sup>that the blessing<\/strong> of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ<\/strong>; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit<\/strong> through faith.<\/span> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 . . .<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Is<\/i> the <\/strong>law<\/span> then against the promises of God?<\/strong> Certainly not!<\/span> For if there had been a <\/strong>law<\/span> given which could have given <\/strong>life,<\/strong><\/span> truly righteousness would have been by the law<\/span>. <\/span> 22\u00a0<\/sup>But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith<\/span> in Jesus Christ<\/strong> might be given to those<\/strong> who believe<\/strong>. <\/span> 23\u00a0<\/sup>But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law<\/span>,<\/span> kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. <\/span> 24\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore the <\/span><\/strong>law<\/span> was our tutor<\/span> to bring us<\/i> to Christ<\/span>, that we might be justified by faith<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span> 25\u00a0<\/sup>But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.<\/strong> \u00a0For ye are all the children of God <\/span><\/strong>by faith in Christ Jesus<\/strong><\/span>. <\/span> 27\u00a0<\/sup>For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. <\/strong><\/span> 2<\/strong>8\u00a0<\/sup>There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one<\/span> in<\/strong> Christ Jesus<\/span>. <\/span> 29\u00a0<\/sup>And if ye be<\/i> Christ\u2019s, then are ye <\/strong>Abraham\u2019s<\/span> seed<\/span><\/strong>,<\/span> and heirs according to the promise<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span>Gal. 3:6-29<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

3\/<\/span> And also could be used for Abraham’s descendants in the flesh, which means the physical<\/strong> seed, the original of next passage is in Greek but in the Old Testament (Hebrew) ‘thy seed’ was almost exclusively used for the Messiah & those who are called<\/strong><\/span> to belong to Jesus Christ (Rom.1:6<\/a>) :<\/p>\n

‘They answered Him<\/span> \u201cWe are Abraham\u2019s seed<\/strong> and have never been in bondage<\/span> to anyone. Why do You say, \u2018You shall be set free\u2019<\/span>? . . . 37\u00a0<\/span>I know that ye are<\/span> Abraham\u2019s seed<\/span>;<\/strong><\/span> but ye seek to kill me<\/strong>, because my word hath no place in you.<\/span> . . 39 <\/span>They answered Him, \u201cAbraham is our father.\u201d<\/strong><\/span> Jesus said to them, If<\/strong> you were Abraham\u2019s children, <\/strong><\/span>you would do the works<\/strong><\/span><\/span> (G2041<\/a>= Deeds, doing, occupation, business) <\/span><\/span>of Abraham.<\/strong><\/span> <\/span> 40\u00a0<\/sup>But now you seek to kill Me,. .\u00a0<\/span> <\/span> 41\u00a0<\/sup>You are doing the works of your father<\/span>. Then they said to Him, \u201cWe were not<\/strong> born<\/strong> of sexual immorality. We have one Father: God<\/strong><\/span>.. . Jesus said to them<\/span>. .You are of your father the devil<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, and you want to do the desires<\/strong> of your father. He was a murderer<\/span> from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth,<\/span> because there is no truth in him<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>“<\/span> John 8:33-47<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus recognized these Jews were the physical seed of Abraham<\/strong>, but spiritually<\/span> they were children of the devil because they didn’t received Him & wanted to kill<\/strong> Him.<\/span><\/p>\n

All of Abraham’s descendants are not necessarily the children of God which receive the promises made to Abraham, because God’s children<\/strong> are<\/strong> not of the flesh<\/strong>. It is a spiritual family<\/span>.<\/span> Abraham believed<\/span> <\/strong>God<\/span>, that’s the reason he is called the father of Faith<\/span><\/strong>. Those Jews that didn’t believe<\/span> Christ<\/strong> were not<\/span> children of faith, nor children of God.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

9.Does<\/i> this blessedness then come<\/i> upon the circumcised only,<\/i> or upon the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness.<\/span> . . F<\/span>or the promise<\/strong> that he would be the heir of the world <\/span>was<\/i> not to Abraham<\/strong> or to his seed through the law<\/strong><\/span>, but through the righteousness of faith<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span> 14\u00a0<\/sup>For if those who are of the law are<\/i> heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect, <\/span> 15\u00a0<\/sup>because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is<\/i> no transgression<\/span>or the promise,<\/strong> that he should be the heir of the world<\/span><\/strong>,<\/span> was<\/i> not<\/span><\/strong> to Abraham, or to his seed<\/strong>, through the law<\/strong><\/span>, but<\/strong> through the righteousness of faith<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span> 14\u00a0<\/sup>For if<\/strong> they which are of the law<\/span><\/strong> be<\/i> heirs<\/strong>, faith<\/span><\/strong> is made void<\/span>, and the promise<\/strong> made of none effect:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><\/span> Romans 4:9-<\/strong>16<\/a>

6\u00a0<\/sup>Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are<\/i> not all Israel, which are of Israel: <\/span> 7\u00a0<\/sup>neither, because they are<\/strong> the seed of Abraham<\/strong>, are they<\/i> all children<\/strong>: but, In Isaac shall thy seed<\/strong><\/span> be called.<\/span> <\/span> 8\u00a0<\/sup>That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are<\/i> not the children of God<\/strong><\/span>:<\/span> but the children of the promise are counted for the seed<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. <\/span><\/span>Roman 9:6-8<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“30\u00a0<\/sup>What shall we say then? The Gentiles<\/strong>, who did not pursue righteousness, have attained<\/strong> righteousness<\/strong>, even the righteousness which is by faith<\/span><\/strong>, <\/span> 31\u00a0<\/sup>but Israel<\/strong>, pursuing the law<\/span> of righteousness, did not attain<\/strong> the law of righteousness. <\/span> 32\u00a0<\/sup>Why not? Because they did not seek it by faith<\/span><\/strong>, but by the works<\/strong> of the law<\/strong><\/span><\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong> For they stumbled<\/span> over the stumbling stone. <\/span> 33\u00a0<\/sup>As it is written:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLook! I lay in Zion a stumbling stone<\/strong><\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and rock of offense,<\/strong><\/span><\/span>
\nand whoever<\/span><\/span> believes in Him<\/span><\/strong> will not be ashamed.\u201d \u00a0 Romans 9: 30-33<\/a>, Isaiah 28:16<\/a>, Isaiah 8:14<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

People who\u00a0 don’t accept that Jesus Christ is ‘the Seed<\/span>‘ according to the Scriptures<\/strong>, or don’t want to accept that a seed can also be spiritual & not only physical, then they will use extra biblical doctrines to explain it. A small doctrinal error can have a big effect on other doctrines, like a domino effect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Same as with Adam & Eve we all choose<\/strong> whom to believe, or God or the serpent. “. . then choose today<\/span> whom you will serve<\/strong>, . . . Yet as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord<\/span><\/em>.\u201d Jos.24:15<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

One teaching that is becoming popular among some religious groups today (with some variations) is the heresy of the ‘Serpent Seed<\/strong>‘ doctrine. This teaching twists Gen.3:15<\/a> to contradict the Word of God,\u00a0 e.g. Gen.4:1 “Now Adam knew Eve<\/strong> his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain<\/strong>, and said. .<\/em>\u201d And it <\/span>teaches that Eve mated with the serpent (Satan), to produce Cain. This teachings appeared in early Gnostic<\/span> writings<\/strong> such as the Gospel of Philip (c. 350); & it is important to note this doctrine was explicitly rejected as heresy<\/strong><\/span> by Irenaeus (c. 180) and later by mainstream Christian theologians.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Rabbi<\/strong> of Reform Judaism, David Max Eichorn in one of his book traces the origin of this teaching back to early Jewish Midrashic<\/span><\/strong> texts and identifies many rabbis who taught that Cain was the son of the union between the serpent and Eve. This doctrine is also found in the Talmud<\/strong><\/span> (circa 400-500 AD Talmud Bavli aka Babylonian Talmud: Yebamoth 103a, Abodah Zarah 22b, etc)<\/i> as well as in Kabbalah <\/strong><\/span>(Rabbinic Jewish mysticism\u2019s text Zohar<\/i>)<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

So please, be aware of any so called ‘Christian’ teachers propagating this doctrine, and for your sake, the sake of your family & those who listen to you, avoid them Romans 16:17<\/a>, avoid Jewish fables Titus 1:14<\/a> , ‘avoid foolish disputes, genealogies<\/strong>, contentions, and strivings about the law<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/em>‘ Titus 3:9-11<\/a>, & have<\/strong> not<\/strong> fellowship with evil works or that are contrary to the teachings of Christ\u00a0<\/span> 2 John 1:9-11<\/a>.
