{"id":5283,"date":"2018-05-10T11:39:36","date_gmt":"2018-05-10T15:39:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=5283"},"modified":"2026-02-11T08:49:55","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T13:49:55","slug":"john-chapter-3-be-born-again-pt-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=5283","title":{"rendered":"John 3, Pt.1 &#8211;  Be Born Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 1 of 4 in the series <a href=\"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?series=born-again\" class=\"series-57\" title=\"Born Again\">Born Again<\/a><\/div><p>Studying the Book of John, Chapter 3, we found there is so much about salvation condensed in this chapter alone, that we decided to share it\u00a0 in two or three posts. This chapter not only contains the most popular bible verse (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john%203%3A16&amp;version=MEV;NKJV;AKJV;RVA\">John 3:16<\/a>) which summarizes the main point of the\u00a0 Christian faith, but also this same chapter explains some critical points about salvation &amp;<strong> how a &#8216;genuine&#8217; Christian life should begin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Even we don&#8217;t belong to the &#8216;King James only&#8217; camp, we mostly use the King James version here, not only because is one of the best <a href=\"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?series=bible-versions\">translations<\/a> in the English language, but also because other bible translations have copy rights which limits their use of words. But in the link to John 3 you will find other bible\u00a0 translations to compare with.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john%203&amp;version=MEV;AKJV;NKJV;RVR1960;OJB\">John chapter 3,<\/a> Jesus is having a conversation with a Pharisee, a Jewish <strong>teacher of the law<\/strong> or &#8216;Rabbi&#8217; (Hebrew word that means master or great one), but this teacher named Nicodemus was also a leader in their judicial system or &#8216;Great Sanhedrin&#8217; court that at the time (Second Temple Period) met in the temple in Jerusalem, &amp; acted as a Supreme Court. The Great Sanhedrin was the final authority on Jewish law and any scholar who went against its decisions was put to death as a rebellious elder.\u00a0 (It was this same Sanhedrin court that plotted Jesus&#8217; crucifixion!). So, in other words this man was not only a Rabbi or master of the law, but also a judge in the supreme court, very knowledgeable &amp; man of power to the Jewish people at the time.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span id=\"en-AKJV-26122\" class=\"text John-3-1\">There was a man of the<strong> Pharisees<\/strong>, named <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Nicodemus<\/span>,<strong> a <\/strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">ruler<\/span><strong> of the Jews<\/strong>: <\/span> <span id=\"en-AKJV-26123\" class=\"text John-3-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>the same came to Jesus by night, and <strong>said unto him<\/strong>, Rabbi, we know that thou art <strong>a teacher come from God<\/strong>: for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him<\/span>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john%203&amp;version=MEV;AKJV;NKJV;RVR1960;OJB\">John 3:1-2.<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Even with all his<strong> knowledge<\/strong> about the law, his humble<strong> personality<\/strong> (a man of his position coming to Jesus) &amp; all the<strong> experience<\/strong> he had, Nicodemus was not saved, but he was about to hear from the Lord Himself that he &amp; everyone need to be <strong>&#8216;born again&#8217; or be born from above!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We know the Sanhedrin was a big enemy of Jesus, when Nicodemus\u00a0 says &#8216;we&#8217; he may be referring to Joseph of Arimathea, who was also a member of the Sanhedrin (Luke 23:50) or could be other Rabbis that agree Jesus was a teacher from God but kept it silent.<\/p>\n<p>Nicodemus, who was a Pharisee, believed like the other Jews that because he was <span style=\"color: #800000;\">born a Jew<\/span> and kept God\u2019s<strong> law<\/strong>, that he should <strong>automatically enter into the kingdom of God<\/strong>. <span id=\"en-MEV-26415\" class=\"text John-8-33\"><\/span><span id=\"en-MEV-28164\" class=\"text Rom-9-8\"><\/span>The Israelites considered themselves already saved or elected unto salvation because they were descendants of Abraham (in the flesh)! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=+John+8%3A33%2C39%2C+Mat.3%3A9%2C&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVA\">John 8:33,39,Mat.3:9.<\/a><span id=\"en-AKJV-26415\" class=\"text John-8-33\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sadly most Jews still believe that today, and consider they are able to sanctify their lives and draw closer to God by fulfilling 613 commandments in accordance with the Talmud.<\/p>\n<p>There are also similar doctrinal errors among other religious groups today, but <strong>nobody is <a href=\"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=2259\">elected<\/a> unto salvation<\/strong>. Jacob (Israel) was chosen to continue<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> to bring the lineage of the Messiah instead Esau, &amp; to carry the blessing of the promise<\/span>,\u00a0 still he wasn&#8217;t chosen for salvation but for a <strong>purpose or service<\/strong>, because he was a believer, that had the same faith of Abraham (his grandfather) &amp; Isaac (his father ).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span id=\"en-AKJV-26124\" class=\"text John-3-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup><strong>Jesus<\/strong> answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee,<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> Except a man <strong>be born <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">again<\/span><\/strong> <\/span>(<a href=\"https:\/\/studybible.info\/strongs\/G509\">G509<\/a>)<span style=\"color: #993300;\">, <span style=\"color: #800000;\">he cannot see the kingdom of God.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-AKJV-26125\" class=\"text John-3-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? <strong>can he enter the second time into his mother\u2019s womb<\/strong>,<strong> and be born?<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john%203&amp;version=MEV;AKJV;NKJV;RVR1960\">John 3:3-4<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Greek word &#8216;ano\u0304then&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/studybible.info\/strongs\/G509\">G509<\/a> can mean both \u201c<span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>again<\/strong><\/span>\u201d and \u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>from above<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;. Example of other times that it was translated&#8217; from above&#8217; we found: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=James+1%3A17%2C3%3A17&amp;version=RVR1960\">James 1:17,3:17<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Jesus mentioned a new birth\u00a0 in verse 3, \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>U<span id=\"en-MEV-26124\" class=\"text John-3-3\"><span class=\"woj\">nless a man<\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> is born again<\/span>, he cannot see the kingdom of God.<\/em><\/span>\u201d and it is born from the<strong> Spirit<\/strong> as other verses confirm.<\/p>\n<p>-When Jesus clarifies the two ways a person can be born, the first time is of<strong> water<\/strong>, &amp; some people interpret this as water baptism. This view is typically held by those who adhere to baptismal regeneration (Catholics, Seven Day Adventist, Calvinists, Church of Christ, etc). But <strong>in context,<\/strong> right next to it, in verse 6 Jesus makes again a comparison between born <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>of the flesh<\/strong> &amp; born of the Spirit .<\/span> In other words we all humans are born of the flesh (of water\/amniotic fluid), <span class=\"comment-copy\">we often say of this event, &#8220;Her <strong>water<\/strong> broke!<\/span> which is an earthly event, &amp; our second birth has to be <strong>of the Spirit of God<\/strong>, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">which is from above<\/span>, a heavenly event (Luke 15:7).<\/p>\n<p>Jesus was saying to Nicodemus that his Jewish birth (born of water) would not get him into the Kingdom of God, and that he needed to be born <strong>of the spirit <\/strong>(from above).<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"top-1 chapter-1\"><span id=\"en-AKJV-26126\" class=\"text John-3-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Jesus<\/span> answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, <span style=\"color: #800000;\">Except a man be <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">born of <strong>water<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> and <i>of<\/i> the <strong>Spirit<\/strong><\/span>, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. <\/span> <span id=\"en-AKJV-26127\" class=\"text John-3-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>That which is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>born of the flesh<\/strong><\/span> is flesh; and <strong>that which is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">born of the <span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\">Spirit<\/span><\/span> is spirit. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john%203&amp;version=MEV;AKJV;NKJV;RVR1960\">John 3:5-6<\/a><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>-In addition, notice that Jesus says (vs.8) &#8220;<em>So it is with <span id=\"en-AKJV-26129\" class=\"text John-3-8\">every one <strong>that is born <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">of the Spirit<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"top-1 chapter-1\"><span id=\"en-AKJV-26128\" class=\"text John-3-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup><strong>Marvel not<\/strong> that I said unto thee, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Ye<\/strong><\/span> (you-plural) <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>must be born again<\/strong><\/span>. <\/span> <span id=\"en-AKJV-26129\" class=\"text John-3-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>The wind bloweth where it listeth (<a href=\"https:\/\/studybible.info\/strongs\/G2309\">G2309<\/a> = pleases, wishes), and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: <strong>so is every one<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>that is born of the Spirit.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-AKJV-26130\" class=\"text John-3-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? <\/span> <span id=\"en-AKJV-26131\" class=\"text John-3-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus answered and said unto him, <strong>Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?<\/strong> <\/span> <span id=\"en-AKJV-26132\" class=\"text John-3-11\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-AKJV-26132\" class=\"text John-3-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen;<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> and ye\u00a0 receive not our witness. <\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-AKJV-26133\" class=\"text John-3-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup><strong>If I have told you earthly things<\/strong>, and <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ye<\/span> believe not,<\/strong> how shall ye believe, if I tell you <i>of<\/i>\u00a0 <strong>heavenly things? <\/strong><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john%203&amp;version=MEV;AKJV;NKJV;RVR1960\">John 3: 7-12<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If He was intending to say that everyone must be born of\u00a0 water (baptism), and Spirit, then it seems logical that He would include both together &#8221; but here we really want to emphasize on being born of the Spirit.<\/p>\n<p>In order to have <a href=\"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=1546\">sound doctrine<\/a> we must use a good bible translation when studying the bible. I used to dislike the thee&#8217;s, Ye&#8217;s &amp; thou&#8217;s in the King James version, but later I realized they are helping us to make a difference among pronouns. We must not tamper with God\u2019s communication to the world, our duty is to deliver His message, <strong>not to change it.<\/strong> Greek is a very precise language, more similar to Spanish, (e.g they both use grammatical gender, specific plural &amp; singular pronouns, etc).\u00a0 When Jesus told Nicodemus &#8220;<span style=\"color: #993300;\">Ye<\/span> must be born again&#8221; He is not saying only Nicodemus is in need to be born again, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>all<\/strong> the Jews &amp; all of us<\/span> reading as well. Modern versions\u00a0 by eliminating these distinctions, not only lose information, but change the meaning of the text, and in some cases also change doctrine.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The apostle Paul says in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Timothy+4%3A16&amp;version=MEV;NKJV;AKJV;RVA\">1 Tim. 4:16<\/a> &#8220;<span id=\"en-AKJV-29764\" class=\"text 1Tim-4-16\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Take heed <\/span>unto <strong>thyself, and<\/strong> unto<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong> the doctrine <\/strong><\/span>(<a href=\"https:\/\/studybible.info\/strongs\/G1319\">G1319<\/a>=teachings, precepts); <strong>continue in them<\/strong>: for in doing this thou shalt both <strong>save <\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #800000;\">thyself, and them<\/span><strong> that <\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">hear<\/span><strong> thee<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In John 3 verse 8, the Greek word &#8216;pneuma&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/studybible.info\/strongs\/G4151\">G4151<\/a> has also a double meaning &#8216;<strong>wind &amp; &#8216;spirit&#8217;<\/strong>. Jesus uses physical illustrations (that we comprehend) to help us understand better the spiritual things.\u00a0 <strong>The new birth is an invisible event,<\/strong> like the wind that we can<strong> hear or see its effects<\/strong>, but we cannot see were it comes from or where it goes, the same happens about everyone that is born of the Spirit, or is born of God.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Whoever<\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> believes<\/span> that <strong>Jesus<\/strong> is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the Christ<\/span><strong> is born of God<\/strong><\/span>, and everyone who <strong>loves Him<\/strong> who begot <strong>also loves him who is begotten of Him<\/strong>.\u201d (1 John 5:1).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Things we have learned so far from John 3:1-12:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>1.<\/strong> <strong>We all need to be born again!<\/strong> <\/span>It doesn&#8217;t matter how much<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <strong>knowledge<\/strong> of the Law or the Scriptures we have<\/span>, or how good, kind or peaceful our <strong>personality<\/strong> is, or our <strong>experience,<\/strong> etc. We can have all of that combined <strong>but still not be born again<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>2.<\/strong><\/span> Notice verse 2 Nicodemus acknowledged Jesus as a &#8216;great teacher of the Law&#8217;, but not as <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">God or the Son of God<\/span>.<\/strong> In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+1%3A1-14&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVA\">1st chapter<\/a> of the same book of John, we find that we <strong>ALL need to receive Christ &amp; believe He is God &amp; the son of God.<\/strong> Nobody is children of God (or born of God) unless they<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> receive &amp; believe<\/span> in Jesus Christ. <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"text John-1-1\">In the beginning was the Word, and <strong>the Word was with God<\/strong>, and the <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Word was God.<\/span> <\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-MEV-26047\" class=\"text John-1-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>He was in the beginning with God. <\/span> <span id=\"en-MEV-26048\" class=\"text John-1-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>All<\/strong> things were created through Him<\/span>, and without Him nothing was created that was created.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-MEV-26049\" class=\"text John-1-4\">\u00a0 . . .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-MEV-26054\" class=\"text John-1-9\"><strong>The true Light,<\/strong> which enlightens <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">everyone<\/span>,<\/span> was<strong> coming into the world<\/strong>. <\/span> <span id=\"en-MEV-26055\" class=\"text John-1-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup><strong>He was in the world, <\/strong>and<strong> the world was created through Him<\/strong>, yet the world did not know Him. <\/span> <span id=\"en-MEV-26056\" class=\"text John-1-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>He came to His own, and <span style=\"color: #800000;\">His own people<strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">did not receive Him<\/span>. <\/strong><\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-MEV-26057\" class=\"text John-1-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Yet<strong> to<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>all who received Him<\/strong><\/span>, He gave the power <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">to become <strong>sons of God<\/strong><\/span>,<\/span> to those<strong> who <span style=\"color: #800000;\">believed<\/span> in His name,<\/strong> <\/span> <span id=\"en-MEV-26058\" class=\"text John-1-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.<\/span><span id=\"en-MEV-26059\" class=\"text John-1-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Word became flesh<\/span> and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, the glory as <strong>the only Son<\/strong> of the Father, full of grace and truth. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+1%3A1-14&amp;version=AKJV;NKJV;MEV;RVA\">John 1:1-14<\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>3.<\/strong> <\/span><strong>Nobody is elected unto salvation. <\/strong>There is not election because of race, denomination, knowledge, special awakening, elite group, etc. Salvation is by <strong>faith<\/strong> alone, available to <strong>everybody<\/strong>!! But<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> FAITH<\/span> comes first, then salvation, not the opposite like most Calvinist teach. See more : <a href=\"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?p=1684\">Foundational Doctrines.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Scriptures is clear &amp; consistent in showing that <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">faith<\/span> <\/strong>(<strong>Believing<\/strong> in Him, His Word)<strong> precedes<\/strong> and is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the condition<\/span> for the <strong>new birth<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cTherefore being justified <strong>by <span style=\"color: #800000;\">faith<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">,<\/span> we have peace with God<strong> through our Lord Jesus Christ:<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211020093551\/https:\/\/www.kingjamesbibleonline.org\/Romans-5-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rom.5:1<\/a>,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo then <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>faith<\/strong><\/span><strong> cometh<\/strong><strong> by hearing<\/strong>, and hearing by <strong>the word of God<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingjamesbibleonline.org\/Romans-10-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rom. 10:17<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span id=\"en-MEV-29220\" class=\"text Eph-1-13\">In Him you also,<strong> after <span style=\"color: #800000;\">hearing<\/span><\/strong> the <strong>word of truth<\/strong>, the gospel of your salvation, and <\/span><span id=\"en-MEV-29220\" class=\"text Eph-1-13\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>after <span style=\"color: #800000; text-decoration: underline;\">believing<\/span> in Him<\/strong><\/span>, were <span style=\"color: #800000;\">sealed with the promised <strong>Holy Spirit<\/strong>,<\/span><\/span>&#8220;. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ephesians%201%3A13&amp;version=MEV;RVR1960;NKJV;YLT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eph. 1:13.<\/a>\u00a0 See more \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingjamesbibleonline.org\/John-5-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jn 5:25<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingjamesbibleonline.org\/John-20-31\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John 20:31<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingjamesbibleonline.org\/John-3-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John 3:16<\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingjamesbibleonline.org\/Romans-10-9\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rom. 10:9<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingjamesbibleonline.org\/1-Peter-1-23_1-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 Pt 1:23-25<\/a>, etc.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"seriesmeta\">This entry is part 1 of 4 in the series <a href=\"http:\/\/cristolaverdad.com\/?series=born-again\" class=\"series-57\" title=\"Born Again\">Born Again<\/a><\/div><p>Studying the Book of John, Chapter 3, we found there is so much about salvation condensed in this chapter alone, that we decided to share it\u00a0 in two or three posts.
